Your opportunity to spend 10 incredible days in Bali, Indonesia, learning about the Island's textile heritage and culture, experiencing first hand the fabric and textiles that have made this area famous. We are excited that we will have a guide who is knowledgeable in all facets of Bali's textile culture who will be leading us on our 10 day journey around the island. We will also have an opportunity to visit the Hoffman of California Batik factory - and are the only group to have been invited for such a visit. This will be very exciting - especially seeing the same fabrics that made Batik famous, actually on the printing line. Our adventure will be full of opportunity - please plan to join us. Itinerary
Day 2 - Sunday, May 3: Upon our arrival in Bali we will be met by our coach and guide for transfer to our hotel - the luxury Payogan Villa Resort and Spa. We will have an orientation tour of the island upon arrival before checking into the hotel. This evening we will meet our guide for the week at a special welcome dinner at our hotel. Our guide has been especially selected for our group based upon his expertise on Balinese textile history and industry. B,D
Day 3 - Monday, May 4: After enjoying a full breakfast at the hotel, we will gather together and depart on a tour to the town of Tohpati and it's Batik Factory. Here we will see Batik dyers, weavers and painters stop for a lecture to learn how Batik is made. Following lunch prepared for us at a local restaurant we will visit the famous art villages of Celuk, Mas, Ubud and Batubulan. The remainder of the day and evening are free. B,L Day 4 - Tuesday, May 5: Today will be a day of leisure to take in the area of our hotel and surroundings in Ubud. The artistic center of Bali, charming Ubud is home to numerous galleries and craft shops, making it an ideal place for us to browse and soak up the Balinese atmosphere. You may wander through the back streets to the strains of gamelan music planning in the distance and feel yourself transported to another world. There will be no shortage of things to do in this lively area. B
Day 6 - Thursday, May 7: Today is all about Balinese textiles. We will bring our bags with us today for this evening we will be dropped beachside at the incredible Nusa Dua Beach Resort and Spa. After leaving the incredible Payogan Villa Resort, we will travel to Ginayar to visit a weft Ikat factory, the Klungkung Market followed by the weaving community of Sideman. Here we will have the opportunity to visit with those who make the Songket Textiles. We will enjoy lunch along our way. In the afternoon we will proceed to Tenganan famous for its geringsing double-Ikat textiles and stop at the Seraya Weaving Community. Following our full day we will be transferred to the beachside resort at Nusa Dua. B, L
Day 7 - Friday, May 8: Today we will apply all we have learned about Batiks in Bali as we spend the day at a workshop in Ubud where we will be able to dye our own Batik Fabrics!! B
Day 9 - Sunday, May 10: Today we will visit Bali's capital for shopping and a quick tour. Denpasar is a bustling area with several attractions of interest, and is well worth exploring. One of the main highlights is the majestic Hindu Temple of Jagat Natha, Denpasar's main Hindu place of worship and the centre of festivals and local events. Just a couple of kilometers out of the city centre are the traditional buildings set in landscaped gardens of the Bali Arts Centre or Taman Budaya, offering some of the best of Balinese culture with regular displays of dance and theatrical productions as well as art exhibitions. The town also offers some colorful markets, selling practically anything from birds and reptiles to food and fabrics, as well as dozens of excellent Chinese and Indonesian restaurants. Again, no shortage of things for us to see and do. B
Day 10 - Monday, May 11. Today is a day of leisure after a quick trip out to see the Hoffman of California Batik Factory. We are very lucky to have the only invitation extended to a visiting group to Bali - and wouldn't you know - it's a group of quilter's?? There isn't a better choice!!. Tonight we will gather for a farewell dinner and cultural dance show. B, D
Day 11 - Tuesday, May 12: Sadly all good things must come to an end and today we will find ourselves departing Bali rich in Indonesian culture and textile knowledge....it may also be that we will be leaving with many incredible memories and fabrics which will go together into a beautiful quilt - Bali style. ***Pamela Mostek our instructor will be choosing the best times for her project presentation and class at a later date.
