"Every day in Bali has been amazing, it's the best trip I've ever been on."

"My first batik trip to Bali was with a group of over 60 quilters and very confusing.  I love the fact that you only take 25, I saw Bali through entirely different eyes this time."

"Bali at this time of year was brilliant and so was the tour.  I was so afraid we would be there in rainy season, but the weather could not have been better."

Fabric manufacture has been an Indonesian tradition for centuries, and Bali is a hub of fabric printing and shopping opportunities.  As an added bonus, our guide is knowledgeable in all facets of Bali's arts and textile culture and leads us on every step of our journey around the island.  It is also our pleasure to offer an exceptional opportunity to visit the Hoffman California-International Fabrics batik factory where you will learn firsthand about the process as well as the many contributions the Hoffman family has made to benefit the island.  Additionally, we provide the opportunity for you to make your own batik in two distinctly different settings.  As you learn how batiks are made and witness the process, you will come away with a whole new appreciation for the skill behind creating these incredible hand made prints.  Come along, make your own batik fabrics, enjoy fabric shopping where batiks average $2.00 a meter, taste incredible food, visit with warm and friendly islanders and enjoy the colors, beauty and inspiration that Bali has to offer.

Day 1 - May 2, 2018.   We will depart San Francisco International Airport to Denpasar, Bali, Wednesday morning May 2, at approximately 01:00 (AM) on Cathay Pacific Airlines.  Relax and enjoy our overnight flight to Hong Kong.  Changing planes in Hong Kong, we arrive in Bali on Thursday, May 3 around 3:00 in the afternoon.  Several meals will be served on our overnight journey. D, B, L, S.    You will need to plan your arrival in San Francisco for May 1, as our flight is shortly after midnight on the 2nd.

Day 2 - May 3: Upon our arrival in Bali, once you have proceeded through customs, we will be met at the airport by our coach and guide for transfer to our incredible hotel on the Indian Ocean. This evening we will meet for a special welcome dinner together. We will have special gift presentation and learn about a Balinese tradition during our dinner, our guide has been especially selected for our group based upon his expertise on Balinese culture, art & textile history and industry. L, D

Day 3 - May 4: After enjoying a full breakfast at the hotel, we will gather together and depart on a tour to the town of Tohpati and it's Batik Factory. Here we will see Batik dyers, weavers and painters and stop for a lecture and demonstration to learn how Batik is made.   Following lunch at one of the favorite stops in Bali - the Bali ZOO, we will visit the famous art villages of Celuk where we will see a silversmith jewelry making demonstration and enjoy one of the area's finest silver establishments.  We will also enjoy a visit to one of the manufacturers at the woodcarving village of Mas. After we return the hotel, the remainder of the day and evening are free.   B, L

Day 4 - May 5:  A special treat is in store today as we are off to dye batik Bali style.  Our workshop today will teach us the fundamentals of the batik resist dyeing process.  Each person will have the opportunity to prepare several pieces of cloth for dyeing as they learn the process of applying the wax.  Following our dyeing time, we will return to our oceanside hotel where the remainder of the day will be free for you to enjoy the beauty of our hotel area or shop in the nearby market areas.  B

Day 5 - May 6: Another amazing opportunity today to print your own batik fabric.  Today we will depart on a journey to a very special privately owned batik factory where they make the beautiful contemporary batiks we all love. It is a similar, but entirely different dyeing process from what we learned yesterday.   Following our morning dyeing, we will have an enjoyable lunch in the capital city of Denpasar followed by what everyone waits for...BATIK SHOPPING.  As of this writing, contemporary (American) batik styles are $2.00 a meter. After our visit here we will enjoy lunch on the way to a coffee plantation.  After our arrival in Ubud sometime in the late afternoon, our guide will take us to the are of the Ubud Palace and Market for an introduction to the area.  The remainder of he afternoon is yours to enjoy the local sites for the remainder of the day.  B, L

Day 8 - May 9:  By this this point in the tour, everyone usually sees one thing they would like to do that is not included on our tour and wishes for an extra free day. SO, we have decided to devote time to the two most popular side trips our visitors have participated in over the years. It is up to you to choose which of the following you would like to do, and we will take care of the rest!  We have arranged either an Indulgent Balinese Spa Treatment or a Balinese Cooking Class.  The choice is yours!  B.

This will be a full morning with much of the time spent outdoors where the fabrics are printed, dyed and dried. Our hosts hold nothing back in showing us the age old processes necessary to make the batiks from this company what they are best known for, incomparable beauty. Not one machine is used in the process - it is all hand done. Not only will you walk away with a different appreciation for batiks, but when you learn more about little known company traditions and their generosity toward the people of Bali and consideration for the Balinese environment, you will walk away having more appreciation for Hoffman as well as their beautiful fabrics. Before heading back to our hotel, we will have lunch at a lovely ocean-side restaurant where you will also be given time for enjoying the beach and swimming. WEATHER -Bali is approximately 8 degrees south of the equator.  So, you can expect a tropical, warm and humid climate all year around with two main, distinctive seasons:  DRY and RAINY.

The best time to travel to Bali depends mainly on the weather, the rainy season is from October - April, the dry season is from May - September.   We plan our Batik Lover's Journey to take advantage of the best weather Bali has to offer, avoiding the torrential downpours of the rainy season.
