Our Quilter European Christmas Market cruises and optional tours have always been a popular choice and our 2018 tour will be no different.  We will be cruising along one of the loveliest areas of the romantic and beautiful Danube River on Viking Cruise Line's Longship Egil enjoying all that the Christmas Season here has to offer.  To enhance your journey we have also arranged optional extensions before and/or after your cruise so that you may enjoy more time in Budapest or Nuremburg.

Join us on our Viking Cruise Line Longship, the Egil, as we sail along the Danube through Hungary, Austria and Germany on our Christmas Market adventure.  The spirit and romance of the holidays will come alive with the scents of mulled spices and traditional caroling in every village along our way.  Not only will we be touring some of the Danube area's finest historic castles and sights, but during our Christmas Market visits we will enjoy an array of stalls brimming with unique handcrafted gifts and ornaments, as well as delicious traditional treats of the area.  Always a favorite, the Christmas Markets of Europe are sure to become one of your best holiday memories.

Cruise Itinerary:

November 30, 2018:  Depart from your home city to Amsterdam.  Our FREE to FLY® program allows you  to depart from the city of your choice, negotiate your best price or use mileage plans or points if you prefer, and not have the hassle of having to meet up with a group at an appointed airport.  You leave when you want and from where you want  Dinner should be served on your flight with a light breakfast before arrival in the morning.  OR, you may be able purchase airfare directly from Viking at a substantial savings, just let us know your preference and we will check on the Viking air for you. December 1, 2018: Arrive in Budapest, Hungary, then transfer to our ship.* After boarding, the afternoon is yours to relax or do a bit of exploring; if your arrival schedule permits, join an organized walk to Budapest’s famous covered market in the three-story Great Market Hall established in 1897. Return to the ship for a traditional Hungarian dinner. Overnight in Budapest. (D) 

December 2, 2018: Budapest, Hungary -  Our morning begins with a panoramic tour of the Pest side of the city. Journey along Andrássy Avenue and see the 19th- and 20th-century mansions, National Opera House, Parliament Building and Chain Bridge. Stop in Heroes’ Square to learn more about Hungarian history, then cross the Danube to Buda’s Castle District. Walk up the hill to Fishermen’s Bastion and Matthias Church; enjoy brilliant views. We will rejoin our ship in Visegrád for lunch as we cruise along the scenic Danube River. Enjoy a midafternoon Viennese coffee workshop, complete with apple strudel. (B, L, D)

December 3, 2018: Vienna, Austria - Today we tour the Austrian capital of Vienna. Ride along the Ringstrasse, which replaced the city walls in the mid-19th century. See some of the city’s baroque architecture, including the world-famous Opera House, St. Stephan’s Cathedral and Hofburg Palace. We will return to the ship for lunch. The rest of the day is yours to further explore the Christmas Markets and the city sites. As always, our cruise Program Director can help you plan your free time. Or you may take an optional tour to Schönbrunn Palace, the “Versailles of Vienna,” erected in 1778 and graced by a number of formal gardens, Grecian statuary, the world’s oldest zoo and Roman ruins. After dinner, relax or enjoy an optional classical concert. (B, L, D)

December 4, 2018: Krems, Austria - After breakfast, explore the time-honored town of Krems and see the Steiner Tor, the last remaining city gate. Visit Göttweig, a working Benedictine abbey that owns many of the vineyards along the Danube. The splendid ceiling fresco in the imperial stairwell is one of the largest in the world. Visit the church, a masterpiece of baroque architecture. Once we rejoin the ship we will cruise leisurely through the captivating Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along our way we will taste some local Austrian specialties as you spot attractive riverside towns and castle ruins. (B, L, D)

December 5, 2018: Passau, Germany - Arrive this morning in Passau, at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers. Our guided walk along the town’s narrow streets will take us through Old Town and past traditional patrician houses. We’ll see the New Bishop’s Residence and visit the impressive baroque St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its ornate interior. Inside, you are treated to a special concert played on the 17,000-pipe organ, considered Europe’s largest church organ.† At your leisure you may enjoy lunch aboard your ship, and return to the city for the Christmas Markets and further exploration on your own before departing. We cruise through the night. (B, L, D)

December 6, 2018: Regensburg, Germany - After breakfast we will meet our
guide dockside for a walking tour through the scenic town of Regensburg, considered one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities. See one of the largest groupings of 13th- and 14th-century church spires, towers and patrician houses north of the Alps. We will also encounter the 12th-century Old Stone Bridge, St. Peter’s Cathedral and a number of idyllic courtyards. We will have time to stroll the streets, shop the Christmas Markets or visit Germany’s oldest restaurant, the Alte Würstküche. Lunch is served aboard the ship.

This afternoon, we will enjoy scenic cruising along the Danube River, or take an optional Danube Narrows excursion.  Should you choose this excursion you will travel by road to Kelheim and board a ferryboat to explore the 400-foot chalk cliffs and dramatic scenery of the Danube Narrows. Visit Weltenburg Abbey*, renowned for the dark ale brewed here by monks since 1050, then rejoin your ship in Kelheim in time for dinner. (B, L, D)

December 7, 2018: Main - Danube Canal & Nuremberg, Germany - Early this morning, we sail through the locks that comprise the Main–Danube Canal, an engineering marvel that stretches 106 miles from Bamberg on the Main River to Kelheim on the Danube. It began as Charlemagne’s dream in 793 and was completed in 1992 with 16 locks that raise the water level 1,332 feet. Today, it enables river travel from the North Sea to the Black Sea.

We will arrive in Nuremberg, Bavaria’s second largest city, around lunchtime. Afterward, your city tour features Zeppelin Field, the former Nazi parade grounds, and the Palace of Justice, the venerable vestige of the Nuremberg Trials; or, you can join an optional World War II tour of the illuminating Documentation Center Museum. You have a brief stop at the main courthouse before returning to Old Town, enclosed within ancient city walls.

Your tour comes to a close with a walk from the imperial palace grounds, past the Albrecht Dürer House and on to the Main Market Square with its elaborate Gothic fountain and beautiful Christmas Market. Afterward you have some time on your own to explore. (B, L, D)

December 8, 2018: Nuremberg - After breakfast, we will disembark.  Those who are not joining our optional tour to Nuremberg will proceed to the airport for your return flight unless you have made other arrangements.

November 29:  Arrive Budapest: Transfer to the our hotel. Take the rest of the day to relax and sample some Hungarian cuisine. A Viking host is available to help you plan your time in Budapest so you can make the most of your visit.

November 30:  Budapest: You have a full day to enjoy some of the sights and attractions of this beautiful city. Walk through Pest and do some shopping along Váci Street. Cross the Danube via the famous Chain Bridge to enjoy the hillier Buda neighborhoods. Tour the Hungarian National Gallery, visit the Bartók Museum or enjoy one of the city’s elegant thermal spas.  You will want to save time for St. Stephen's Basilica and the Christmas Markets there. December 1: After breakfast, enjoy the morning at leisure before transferring to our ship in the afternoon. (B)

Post - Cruise Optional Tour - Nuremberg
December 8-10, 2018

December 8, Day 8: Nuremberg, Germany.

After disembarkation, join a guided tour of Nuremberg Castle followed by the Nuremberg National Museum. We will take a short ride up the hill and tour the famous complex, which was one of the most important imperial castles of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Ages.  We will arrive at the hotel around lunchtime, and the rest of the day is yours to relax or explore some of Nuremberg's attractions on your own. December 9, Day 9: Nuremberg, Germany

Today is a full day to spend as you like.  Art aficianados may wish to return to the Germanische National Museum or the Albrect Durer House'.  There is also a Toy Museum, which chronicles Nuremberg's long history as a toy-making town and displays toys dating back centuries, and the DB Museum (the German Railway Museum). This evening you might like to visit a Brauhaus to enjoy the ambiance and taste some of the local beers. (B)

 

December 10, Day 10:Nuremberg, Germany

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and proceed to the airport for your return flight home. (B)
