7 Day Fathom Cruise to CUBA
March 5-12, 2017

An opportunity to see the real Cuba, before their amazing history, infrastructure and culture are further influenced by the outside world.  Now, with the US/Cuban agreement opening Cuba's borders to travelers from the USA, we are offering a historic opportunity to help build new bridges to this rich and vibrant culture.  Our one-week cruise will be part of an ongoing cultural exchange.  We will be immersed in the world of artists, musicians, students, small business owners and others who make up the fabric of Cuban society.

Fathom.org, is the first company allowed to bring a cruise ship into Cuba in over 50 years.   This will be like no other cruise as you will immediately find yourself immersed in Cuba from the moment of embarkation. At sea, the Cuban cultural experience will travel with us, helping us deepen our connection to the country and its people.  We will have Spanish lessons and take part in interactive workshops, dine from Cuban inspired menus and enjy evenings of Cuban music and dance.  Cuban films and expert speakers will help us broaden our understanding of Cuba's history and culture. Once we are on land, the included shore excursions will take us deeper into the special heritage of this island.

This is an amazing opportunity for those who enjoy quilts and culture to travel and spend the week together immersed in all things Cuba.  In order to fully take advantage of the cultural workshops and activities on-board, there is no dedicated quilt project for this cruise.  However, it is a way to make new friends and enjoy the journey as we dive into new territory with others who share our common interest of quilts and textiles.

Ports of Call:

Havana: Cuba's colorful capital is probably best known for the Spanish architecture of Old Havana.  But its historic castles, fortresses, cathedrals, mansions and public buildings vie for attention with the city's lively music and entertainment scene and mix of museums, art galleries, music, dance and open-air festivals.

Cienfuegos/Trinidad:  The costal city of Ceinguegos is known to Cubans as the Pearl of the South.  New the entrance to the bay stands the fortress of Casstillo de Jagua, built in 1745 to protect this city from pirate attacks.  An hour away is Trinadad, one of Cuba's best-preserved cities from the days of sugar trading.  It was from here, in 1518 that Hernan Cortes recruited men for his legendary expedition.

Santiago de Cuba:  The distinctly Caribbean spirit of Santiago de cuba is evident in every aspect of the city's Afro-Cuban heritage. The city is home to the popular festivals of Carnival and the Fiesta del Fuego, as well as to many of the country's most famed musicians and artists.  Its diverse architecture ranges from the Spanish fortress of Castillo del Morro to the red-domed towers of the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Caridad del cobre, Cuba's sacred pilgrimage site.
