Create this fun traditional Aloha shirt quilt using Hoffman’s tropical fabrics.

Materials List

– Backing fabric – crib quilt size
– A large piece of white or cream fabric (It needs to be reasonably heavy weight)
– 1-2 m of transfer adhesive
– Black thread

We will be seeing all kinds of birds on our Hawaiian adventure.  Gillian used birds she’s spotted on her travels to inspire this fun bird quilt. 

The blocks are made using a “quilt as you go” method using easily made thin sashing to join the blocks.  Once our striped background is made, we will use an innovative method to appliqué the birds to complete our lively project.

Patterns for the guinea fowl and the storks will be available for students to use, or you can use your own bird pattern. 

The size of the finished quilt and the number of the blocks made will depend on the speed of working.

–      This technique can be used to make a quilt using a photograph as a starting point and add a variety of images that could be appliquéd over the top. It need not be a bird.

Requirements to make 4 blocks

• Transfer Adhesive eg Heat n Bond lite
• Pencil
• Small scissors eg 4”
• Please bring, (if you have one) a 6mm Bias binding maker (I have a few for students to use)
• Plain fabrics (or fabrics with not too much pattern) approximately 10” width and in a variety of colours. 
• Appliqué fabric
• Guinea Fowl QuiltSmall amounts of red fabric
• Small amounts of white fabric
• Black and white spotted fabric

• Stork QuiltSmall amounts of black fabric
• Small amounts of orange / red fabric
• Small amounts of white fabric

 Either quilt

• Wadding or batting 4 pieces appox 10” square
• Backing fabric approx 20” square – 100% cotton fabric – any colour is suitable
• Binding fabric eg small spots in a contrasting colour approx 6” x 20”

n 2015, I made a series of quilts that started by taking a simple shape and repeating it.  I developed an innovative and economical method of interchange appliqué to make contemporary quilts. They started with a pomegranate design but developed to include jugs, pots and many other designs.

Students will learn a new method of fused appliqué and be able to make a table mat or similar. We will start by carrying out some simple paper exercises and quickly move on to fabric. I will have a small kit that students can purchase from me but can then use their own fabric.

In 2009 I won a first prize at the Festival of Quilts in the UK with a large bunch of felt flowers. I have made many more bunches of different sizes since.  

On this course you will be able to make a bunch of 3D everlasting fabric flowers using colorful batiks. I have based my designs for this bunch on hibiscus flowers.

If you have some cheap scissors that you can use to cut thin wire please bring them.

Making the first flower usually takes the morning, making the rest of the bunch is much quicker.
 

Mandatory Kit: $3 for stem wire and pieces for the flower centers.

You may like to custom your flowers and use buttons, if so bring a few of your favorite buttons

All early Pacific cultures made fabric from the pounded bark of certain plants, but Hawaiian tapa was distinguished from all the rest by its fine texture, bold colors and abstract designs. Used for clothing, ornaments, bedding, burial shrouds, religious coverings and banners, tapa was usually made from the inner bark of the wauke and mämake plants.

My new collection of quilts is made using an innovative method of weaving or interlacing. I have developed the patterns and designs to make fabric blocks that when put together can make a wall hanging, cushion or bag.

Blocks are 4” square but could be slightly bigger or smaller. It’s an innovative method of making a wall hanging, it’s clever, addictive and fun to do. The number of blocks made will depend on how quickly you work. The stitching and quilting will be carried out at home.

• Pencil
• Graph paper – you may find this useful if you want to draft your own patterns
• Ruler
• Ipad or tablet – if you have one 
• Scissors – small and large
• Transfer Adhesive eg Vlisifix or Bondaweb – you will need at least double the size of your finished item
• Hoffman Batiks or Me & You fabric in contrasting colours,  It is a good idea to choose Batik fabrics that do not have too much pattern. We will have some fat quarter packs of these to buy onboard.
• Rotary cutter, small mat and ruler
• Pins – Quilters clips are also useful
• Fine cotton fabric for placing the blocks on to. The size will depend on how many blocks are made
• Batting or fine wadding (size as above)
• Backing fabric (size as above)

Students will receive patterns for use on the day. A small charge of $5 will be made for these
