Enjoy our fabulous 16 Day Celtic journey with Sue Spargo.  Our Ireland tour is always amazing but as Sue will be joining us in 2025, it won’t ever be much better. We are proud of our tour reviews and reactions to one of our favorite annual tours, which will suit anyone, but especially a quilt enthusiast as we’ve planned this visit to enjoy Ireland from a quilter’s perspective. 

Our comprehensive tour features the best of Emerald Isle scenery and with our relaxed touring schedule we will have ample time for quilt shops and  fabric browsing as we enjoy the sights along our way. Our tour is expanded several days longer than other Ireland quilting tours her so we may include an additional day in Dublin and provide an opportunity to take a Celtic theme quilt class with one of Ireland’s most beloved quilting instructors.  Our special journey together will highlight the beauty of the Irish countryside, diversity of Irish heritage and culture as  well as allow us to meet and enjoy the company of Irish quilters.   

Our circle Ireland tour begins and ends in Belfast and west to the beautiful Irish Atlantic coast along the Wild Atlantic Way, then south to Cork giving you a first hand glimpse into all that makes this beautiful island so magical.  Then we travel up to Dublin before ending our tour in Belfast where we will attend Ireland’s QUILT FAYRE!  As a special bonus, Sue Spargo is designing a special project for our 3 day workshop at the end of the tour.

Three day workshop with Sue Spargo in Belfast   

Dublin: Enjoy the vibrant pubs, eclectic markets, and numerous cultural attractions that make Dublin one of the most interesting small cities in the world. Founded as a Viking settlement at the mouth of the River Liffey, Ireland’s capital city is rich with history and filled with storytellers. Major landmarks include: Christ Church Cathedral (the oldest building in Ireland), the Dublin Castle (which has stood since the 12th Century), the Spire of Dublin, the statue of Molly Malone, Trinity College, and the Guinness brewery. Here  you’ll find cobbled streets, lit with the ruddiness of pubs ringing with Irish folk tunes.  

Belfast: Compact and easy to explore on foot, Belfast is known for its turbulent history as well as an attitude that values having a good time. The city has something to offer everyone, from an international selection of restaurants, bars, and cafes, to a rugged natural splendor.  There are hundreds of pubs in Northern Ireland’s capital, but The Crown is something special and a must for any visitor, located just across the street from the Grand Opera House and our fabulous 4 star hotel.  Also, the birthplace of the Titanic!  We will make a stop at the fabulous Titanic Museum for any who would wish to take a tour here.

The Giants Causeway: The Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles northeast of the town of Bushmills.

Ulster Folk Art Museum: Step back in time and uncover a way of life from 100 years ago. Discover cottages, farms, schools, and shops as you wander through the beautiful parkland of the Folk Museum chatting to costumed visitor guides demonstrating traditional crafts. Climb on and off majestic steam locomotives or experience the sensation of flight in the Transport Museum bursting with horse drawn carriages, electric trams, motorbikes, fire-engines, and vintage cars.  

Cliffs of Moher: Towering heights and crashing waves, ageless legends and endless flurrying birds: the Cliffs of Moher are a natural masterpiece. These breathtaking sea cliffs are located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare, Ireland. They run for about 14 kilometres.

County Kerry: A county in the South-West Region of Ireland, Kerry is one of the most mountainous regions of Ireland. It faces the Atlantic Ocean and features many peninsulas, inlets, and islands, resulting in a breathtakingly picturesque landscape. Kerry is as close as one can get to the mythical Ireland: A Celtic kingdom of misty mountains promised by glossy brochures and Hollywood films. **

Dingle Peninsula: Located in County Kerry and comprising Europe’s westernmost point, the Dingle Peninsula features stunning views, natural wonder, and extensive archaeological monuments dating back 6,000 years. This is the sort of fairytale place that one might imagine when reading Celtic folklore and mythology. Many Hollywood movies have been filmed here.  While here you will have an opportunity to take an optional Celtic quilting workshop.

Slea Head Drive: A circular route, beginning and ending in Dingle, which takes in a large number of attractions and stunning views on the western end of the Dingle Peninsula. Slea Head is a well-known and recognized landmark and very scenic viewpoint, with a dramatic view of the Blasket Islands.

Ring of Kerry:  Rolling green hills and sparkling lakes. Sheep and cows grazing in patchwork fields. Unspoiled golden beaches giving way to jaw-dropping cliffs. You will find each turn brings a new treat, from lakes, rivers, waterfalls and castles. This treasure on southwest coast of Ireland really has it all.  

Sheepdog Trials: Enjoy up close and personal viewing of sheepdogs and the sheep they guard.  See how they work, obey commands and take care of their flocks.  This is a rare treat that has been well received by our guests.

Blarney Castle: A medieval stronghold in Blarney, near Cork, Ireland. At the top of the Castle lies the Stone of Eloquence, better known as the Blarney Stone, which legend tells us is a magical stone upon which Irish kings were crowned. 

Waterford Factory:  A manufacturer of crystal, the factory is named after the city of Waterford, Ireland. The origin of crystal production in Waterford dates back to 1783, when George and William Penrose started producing extremely fine flint glass that became world-renowned. Today, skilled craftsmen are on display demonstrating their trade of making the Waterford Crystal. Experience the meticulous process of molding, blowing, cutting, sculpting, and engraving that goes into producing this fine crystal. 

Historic Avoca Mill: Now famed for it’s food and fabulous woven articles, in 1723 this co-operative weaving mill was set up along the banks of the Avoca River. Here, local farmers could grind their corn, and spin and weave their wool for clothing for the local miners. Times were tough in rural Ireland and the mill was soon a vital local resource.

August 16, 2025 – OFF TO BELFAST!  We welcome travelers from all over the world, however, if departing from the USA, most flights are overnight and our  “Free to Fly” program allows you the freedom to depart from the city of your choice, using mileage plans or points if you prefer, and you do not have the hassle of having to meet up with a group at an appointed airport. You may leave from where you want and when you want.

August 17, 2025- Belfast ARRIVAL: After landing at the Belfast International Airport, you will make your way to the hotel, you are free to settle into your room. You may like to rest or explore some of the city on your own before we meet in the early evening.

Tonight, we will enjoy dinner in a lovely Irish pub. It is a wonderful way to begin our incredible Irish journey together.  Overnight Belfast.   D

August 18, 2025 – This morning, we will drive north to experience one of Ireland’s popular scenic routes along the coast road. Here you’ll see the “Nine Glens of Antrim” which offer wonderful views of mountains, valleys and coastline. We will stop to view the Giant’s Causeway, an impressive area of hexagonal columns formed over 60 million years ago by cooling lava and has given rise to many legends.    

As we return to the city we will have a driving tour and learn more history about the infamous ‘troubles’ and enjoy a local quilt shop.  Once we are back at our hotel the remainder of the day is free for us to explore the lively city. For those who wish to visit Titanic Belfast, we will arrange a drop off for you here before the remainder of the group returns to the hotel. Overnight Belfast   B

August 19, 2025 – Today, we’ve arranged a special visit at a living history museum, the focus here is on ways of life and traditions of the people of Northern Ireland.   As you enjoy the homes in the village, take note of the Irish quilts that may be on the beds and tables.  Additionally, as time allows we will have a curatorial visit to see some of the antique quilts in their collection.  We will take time for lunch here (on your own) as they serve lovely traditional Irish stews, soups and sweets. We will make our way back to the hotel via Belfast’s favorite quilt and fabric shop. The evening is free for sightseeing, shopping and independent dining.  Overnight Belfast  B 

August 20, 2025- Departing Belfast we will drive south then west across Ireland through the fertile midland region, dotted with farms and marketing towns, where we can see how many Irish people make a living from farming, which is of great importance to the Irish economy. In the early afternoon we be stopping at a wonderful quilt shop or two before arriving in Galway. We spend the night in Galway, be sure to ask at the hotel about walking directions to Galway’s lively Latin Quarter with a multitude of restaurants and shops (about a 15-20 minute  walk away ). Enjoy the balance of the day at your leisure.  Overnight Galway B

August 21, 2025 – A wonderful and active day is planned as we drive around the shores of Galway Bay and through the Burren Country, an unique region of limestone hills where many rare flowers thrive in the sheltered crevices.

We will stop at the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher, a wall of rock that plunges 700 feet to the churning Atlantic Ocean below. Later we will take a ferry to cross Ireland’s Shannon River, ending our day in the charming seaside town of Dingle where we will stay for the next four nights.  This evening will gather for dinner together at the hotel.  Overnight Dingle B, D

August 22, 2025 – After breakfast this morning we will embark on a driving tour of the town of Dingle. With a population of only 1200, Dingle serves a larger population of the surrounding countryside. Situated below Slievanea Mountain, the town faces comfortably onto a sheltered harbor. As a market town and fishing port, Dingle has long been famous for its pubs and many opportunities to enjoy traditional Irish shopping, food and entertainment.

As we travel on the beautiful and noteworthy Slea Head Drive we will discover the beauties of the Dingle Peninsula, made famous by David Lean’s movie, “Ryan’s Daughter.” This is one of the most beautiful areas in all Ireland and is packed with history from about 500 BC. Driving along the south shore of the peninsula we will enjoy vistas of heathery mountains, sandy stretches of beach and rocky headlands.  Along our way we will be able to look across the bay to the Blasket Islands and Dunmore Head. Not to be missed, we will stop and enjoy sheepdog trials, seeing how these intelligent dogs are trained to guard and protect the area’s sheep. Additionally we will have the opportunity to visit houses and remains from Ireland’s famine era.

After our sightseeing tour, we enjoy lunch at a wonderful (and our favorite) Irish Pub.  Overnight Dingle B, L

August 23, 2025 –  Following breakfast today we will enjoy one of Ireland’s most famous and scenic drives is along the Ring of Kerry.   Along our way we will take in some of the most beautiful views of Ireland as we travel on its circular route. We will enjoy beautiful beaches, villages, green pastures, and mountain ranges in County Kerry.  Overnight Dingle  B

August 24, 2025 – We’ve traveled a long way since our adventure began and today is a free day for us to relax, unwind a little and enjoy the beautiful Dingle Peninsula. From walking, to bicycling to fishing, there are many activities that await. For those that wish you may take an optional quilting class from 9-12 (see below) or enjoy our optional visit to Muckross Farm (also below). Overnight Dingle B

August 25, 2025 – We’re off to the Blarney Castle where you will have an opportunity to climb the battlements and kiss the famous “Stone of Eloquence”. The remainder of our day will be in the Blarney area so take the afternoon for a traditional pub lunch and shop in their famous Mill store or take a nice walk in the lovely gardens and parks nearby.  Overnight Blarney  B

August 26, 2025 – After leaving Blarney this morning, we will visit the House of Waterford Crystal to learn about their special glass blowing and cutting process and to see their one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Continuing north through the Irish countryside stopping at the fabulous historic  Avoca Weaving Mill for a mill tour before ending our day in Dublin.  Once we arrive at our city center hotel the remainder of the day is free.  Overnight Dublin B 

August 27, 2025 – Following breakfast we will enjoy a panoramic tour of the city where we will see the prominent historic buildings, monuments and beautiful vistas of the area. Dublin is an ancient settlement, founded by the Vikings in the 9th century. The city has been molded through the centuries with many architectural styles, reflecting the economic, political and artistic influences.  We will make a stop at a favorite fabric shop during this time. After our time here we will return to the hotel and  you are free to enjoy the city on your own, you may wish to make pre-booking arrangements (strongly suggested) to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College. August 28, 2025 – Today you are free to enjoy the sights of Dublin as you wish.  B

August 29, 2025 –Following breakfast, we will depart Dublin and travel north along the coast to Drogheda. We will continue north, driving through the towns of Dundalk and Newry and past the scenic Mourne Mountains driving into Belfast which is situated on the deep inlet of Belfast Lough surrounded by hills.  Once in Belfast we will stop at one of the area’s most friendly and colorful quilt shops before checking into our hotel.   The remainder of the afternoon and evening are for your enjoyment of the area.  With several wonderful pubs just across from our hotel you will find a lovely and traditional spot for dinner.   Overnight Belfast.  B

 August 30, 2025 – Eat well this morning as today we will visit Irelands Quilt Fayre!  This is the largest quilting extravaganza on the Island!! We will enjoy a day long visit at the fayre, however for those who might wish to return to the hotel early, we will have a pick up time arranged.  This evening we will meet together for a Farewell Dinner. August 31, 2025 – All too soon, our Irish vacation has come to an end. Following  breakfast, you may arrange transportation to the airport with the hotel.   B 

Workshop with Sue Spargo –  August 31-September 2
Spend three additional days in Belfast enjoying the embroidery techniques teaching style of Sue Spargo.  Sue is preparing a custom project just for our retreat. I for one cannot wait for this special time learning from Sue.  Price includes workshop, accommodations, breakfast and lunch daily.  shared $1675,  private $2150 (minimum enrollment required).

Option –  A celtic theme quilt class

On the free day in Dingle, enjoy a Irish theme quilt project with one of Ireland’s most beloved quilting instructors. The class will be from 9am – 12 noon, allowing you plenty of time left in your day to enjoy Dingle’s charm in the afternoon.   Kit and instructor fee $110. (minimum enrollment required).

Option –  Muckross House and Garden with Traditional Farm Visit

Additionally, we are offering a special tour for those who do not wish to participate in the quilting workshop.  

Our optional tour to Muckross House and Traditional Farm is planned at the same time as the quilt workshop so that friends and spouses who accompany you will also have an option on this day. 

In the midst of Killarney National Park (Ireland’s oldest National Park) sits Muckross House, a nineteenth century Victorian Mansion. The house stands close to the shores of Muckross Lake, one of Killarney’s three lakes, famed worldwide for their splendor and beauty. Your visit will include a tour of the home and entry to the beautiful gardens.   Additionally, you will have the opportunity to visit Muckross Traditional farm where you will step back into the past and visit a very different Ireland.   This was Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s,  when a trip to the well was still a daily chore and electricity had yet to be introduced to the countryside. Visit three separate working farms (small, medium and large), each complete with animals, poultry and machinery. The farm dwellings are furnished in traditional style, complete with dressers, settle-beds with quilts and meal bins. There is also a Laborer’s Cottage, a Carpenter’s Workshop and a Blacksmith’s Forge.  The craft shop is full of local weavings and crafts and should not be missed!

Why do people travel to quilt? How often do they travel?

When the terminology “quilt tour” is used, I suppose it does conjure up the vision of ladies and gentlemen traveling to work on quilt. However, quilts and/or textiles are the passion that often brings the group together, and there is not always an active quilting component on every group.

 

The purpose for the experience varies from group to group. I have groups of quilt and textile historians that travel to see historic pieces while other groups travel to shop for exotic and hard to find fabrics. Still, others travel for the fellowship with those who share their enthusiasm. It seems that when one exists, often the actual quilting project is not as important as spending time with others who have a built in connection through quilts and quilt-making.

How often they travel often depends upon their economic and family situation. I have some clients who have been on many of our trips, others who travel with me once a year, and some who look at a single tour as a way to a brief respite from the ordinary.

What are the essentials/basics of a quilt/textile cruise or tour?

Outside of providing value in a quilt and textile related vacation experience, inspiration is the key essential on any trip; this is found in many ways. Quilters and textile enthusiasts are often inspired by landscapes, museum visits, quilts and textiles they see, by sharing with each other and the bonds they make with their fellow travelers. While the focus of any itinerary is inspired by quilts, a theme is often important in terms of how local quilt-making customs or historic textiles relate to the community that is being visited. One activity that most everyone looks forward to is any opportunity to shop for unusual or locally produced fabrics that will further inspire their quilt-making once they return home.

 

On our quilt history tours, for those who are historians, I feel it is important to include visits to historic archives and provide unusual opportunities to see antique quilts that are not often available for public viewing. An essential element for me then as a quilter as well as a quilt historian is to have a professional relationship with my colleagues within these institutions as this often opens doors to archives where we would not otherwise have access.

I believe it is helpful when the planner is knowledgeable about quilts and spends time with quilters in areas not surrounded by travel. As a quilter, show judge, appraiser and author, I spend a lot of time around quilts and quilt-makers. This helps me know their special interests and my tours are planned specifically around these things; they are not tours planned and then marketed to those who make quilts. In order for them to produce results, I have noticed a number of “quilt tour” providers that have hired a guest quilter to accompany a land tour group. Many times, this may seem like a benefit to the traveler, but, just as often, an additional cost is added to the tour in order to pay for the famous named guest who is coming along. I will not burden my travelers with those types of additional charges. If I feel that having such a guest would benefit a group or the overall tour experience, I will have one, but it is not a factor I often consider.

 

It is also important to have knowledge of class and workshop limitations. When planning actual quilting classes the planner should be aware of time constraints, materials and the facility suitability to the project.

I believe my most popular destinations to date have been Ireland, France and Bali, each for different reasons. The beauty of Ireland speaks for itself and we enjoy many scenic vistas along our way. Additionally, we stop at quilt shops up and down the Emerald Isle.  Often, we’ve been compared to an “Irish Quilt Shop Hop”. France is known in history for its contributions to both the fabric and quilt world, and Bali for its exquisite batik fabrics and special culture.

 

Our most popular cruises have been the ones that go to Alaska, the European Christmas Markets or international destinations such as the Baltic or Asia.

 

The most popular activity by far is shopping. I try to plan tours that not only offer rewarding textile experiences but also provide a truly memorable experience. Most of my travelers choose a destination they have always wanted to visit.

What is it about World of Quilts Travel that you would like to share?

As a quilter and travel enthusiast, I plan each tour as if I am planning it for myself or my family. I take every stop into consideration. It sometimes takes weeks or longer to create the perfect itinerary. To me, travel is about the total experience as well as providing a good value and I do all that I can to keep the travel experience affordable. I am not a large travel agency; all of my group travel experiences are simply about quilts and textiles.

 

When selecting a quilt tour or cruise provider, it is important to note there may be others who promote quilt trips that will happen to coincide with their other special-interest group tours. While it might be a fun group I believe that it might be surprise for a group of 10 quilters to find themselves sharing a motor coach with poker players (this has happened). This would be a convenient way for some to fill a coach, but I do not mind keeping my groups small. I find when everyone in a group shares the same passion, bonding is almost instant. Always ask your quilt tour provider if they are promoting the same tour or cruise to any other type of hobby or interest group.

 

I promote quilt related travel simply for the joy of sharing the world of quilts and textiles with others. I love to travel – and what better way is there to see things than with others who share similar interests.

Who travels on your tours?

Our travelers are of all ages and from all parts of the world. They share a passion for quilts and quilting, textiles, arts and crafts, and share a desire to connect with the lives and cultures in the places they visit. Many who travel with us are first time travelers, while others have done a lot of travel in the past but are looking for something unique that they can’t organize on their own and/or enjoy the company of others with the same interests. The age group of our tour participants ranges from around 35 to 85 years of age but we have had travelers from 13 up join our groups.

Can husbands or companions join a quilt or textile focused tour?

Yes absolutely – although we focus on quilts and textiles there is always something else for those with other interests to do or see. In general, about 20 – 25% of our groups are companions in this category. We always have husbands who come along, so if you want to bring yours, chances are he will not be the only one.

What if I don’t want to participate in the various visits, educational opportunities or hands-on classes?

While Deb does provide a variety of visits, hands-on classes and workshops they are not mandatory. This is your vacation; you may do whatever you like. While the activities are designed for every level and many are purely for fun and interaction with the local people, if there are any activities that you don’t want to do – just let us know and we will suggest alternative activities for you or you may adventure out on your own.

How fit do I have to be to join a tour?

Some of the tours do have periods that require active walking and a few may feature extended coach or train rides (greater than 4 hours) We have found that most people of normal fitness and mobility are able to participate fully. Those who may have difficulty walking may participate at a level comfortable to them. Please see our terms and conditions regarding health issues. Because we are not aware of any individual’s health condition, we do ask that you receive an okay from your health practitioner to participate on any of our tours.

What if I’m a single traveler?

Our groups are a mix of single travelers, couples and friends. If you are a solo traveler and wish to share with someone we will attempt to find someone else on the tour who wishes to share a room. If there is no one wanting to share the only difference in your cost is that of the single room supplement that we pay to our hotels or you may choose not to participate with a full refund of your deposit.

Do you provide travel protection?

Yes, we provide travel protection through several suppliers. On your trip web page, a link is provided to the travel insurance coverage which will also provide you with information about the insurer. You may choose to purchase travel protection through us, or from any provider of your choice. There are many online travel insurance options available to you.

Is travel protection mandatory?

No, we provide it as an option to you, or you can purchase it from any travel insurance provider. However, because unexpected things do happen, we strongly suggest that you have coverage.

Is my deposit refundable?

Yes, your deposit is completely refundable (less a $100 administration fee, $200 administration fee if on a Viking Cruise) if you change your travel plans and cancel up to 45 days prior to the final payment deadline. Please refer to our terms and conditions for additional tour or cruise refund rules.

When do I have to make the final payment for the trip?

Final payment is approximately 90 days prior to the beginning of any cruise or tour. You will receive an invoice by email about 30 days prior to the deadline.

How do I pay?

You may pay with a personal check (if you reside in the US), money order, cashier or bank check (if you reside outside of the US) or, you may use PayPal or Google Pay. Please note, the quoted tour price includes a 3% discount for those paying in by check. Those who choose to pay through PayPal using a credit card will not receive this discount.

What if I wait to sign up for the trip after the final payment deadline?

You may still sign up for the trip after the final payment deadline, providing there is still space available. We will need your payment in full at the time your register however.

Will I need a passport?

You are required to have a passport valid for six months past your tour date for trips outside your country of citizenship.

Will I need to get immunizations?

Most of our tours do not require special immunizations, but some do. Your health care provider is the best judge as to what you may need for your trip. To guide you as to possible immunizations suggested for your itinerary, please refer to http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel.

How soon should I book my tour?

We suggest booking your tour as soon as you know you want to go. Because we try to keep our groups small, we have limited capacity (often times we will only take 25). Several of our tours sell out within a month of being made available. We hate to have anyone disappointed.

How many do you take on a tour?

It’s not our goal to fill a 50 seat bus. We like to hold our land based tours to about 25 guests.

What about my flight?

For tours where she feels that the group arriving together is beneficial, Deb will include a choice to have group air included or a land only option, this information is always on individual tour information page.

However many people would rather not have to take an extra day of travel in order to meet in one departure location to join the group, so because of many requests, Deb has developed what she calls a “FREE to FLY” program. With this program, you may depart from your home city to wherever our tour begins (and even go a day or two early, it’s up to you). By providing this program, it allows you to depart from the city of your choice, using mileage plans or points if you prefer, and not have the hassle of having to meet up with a group at an appointed group departure airport. You leave when you want and from where you want. It also works for coming home too; if you want to stay on a few days, there is no problem as you are not bound by group departure schedules.

Do you provide airport transportation to the hotels?

Unless your tour begins at the designated airport, we allow you to provide your own transportation to the hotel. So many times our guests arrive at different times and on different days we find it is best for our guests to arrange their own transportation.

Will you help us with airport accommodations if we want to come early or stay late?

Yes, we will assist in booking your room for an extension on either end by providing the contact details to the hotel for you to make these arrangements. However, we cannot guarantee availability.

What kinds of accommodation will I stay in?

All of our accommodations are handpicked by Deb. Most hotels are at least 4 star and while some do not offer all of the same amenities we ascertain that they provide a very clean, safe, quiet and relaxed atmosphere so you can enjoy your holiday.

We also endeavor to be certain that the majority of our accommodations are located in the town or city center so that it is easy for you to explore when you have some time to yourself. We also try to choose hotels that have restaurants or dining options nearby.

How will I be getting around?

On land tours, we travel by deluxe comfortable and air-conditioned private coaches which allow us the freedom to stop and shop with the locals and take great photos along the way. When we travel by train, whenever possible, we use the Fast Rail service and first class seats. On tours that fly domestically from one area to another these domestic flights will generally be included (see individual tour inclusions) however departure taxes for the domestic flights are additional must be paid by each tour member.

What about the type of food that is available?

Eating is one of the highlights of travel and Deb likes to make sure you get to experience as much local cuisine as you wish. On cruises, all onboard meals are provided and there is an abundant selection to choose from. For our land tours, we always provide breakfast and depending on the area we visit, we include other meals as well. Please see each individual itinerary to see what meals are included. We do not always include all meals as we know it’s fun to go off on your own to explore food options.

Our knowledgeable guides will provide you with recommended restaurants for meals which are not included on the tour. If you have preferences for food, for example vegetarian you just need to indicate that on your booking form and we will look after it for you. When meals other than breakfast are included in your tour beverages are usually ‘extra’s’.

What if I have a special dietary need?

We will make note of this and every attempt will be made to accommodate this. However, we cannot guarantee it at all times. You are the best person to determine what you should eat when making food options. We’ve not had any issues in the past helping those with dietary needs.

Are there any hidden costs?

No, there are no hidden costs. Once you’ve arrived, there is no local payment and your tour cost covers everything except: international flights (unless included in the package), international airport taxes and fuel surcharges, taxis, beverages, personal expenses, meals taken outside the tour group meals, or activities that you undertake to do on your own. Immunizations, Visas and Passport fees are also not included. Everything that is indicated on the individual tour itinerary as ‘included’ is covered by your tour or cruise cost.

What is your smoking policy?

Smoking is not allowed on motor coaches. Hotels have individual policies.  We ask for the comfort of those who do not smoke, that smokers do so in an area away from the group.

Is tipping necessary?

Gratuities are included for all hotel bell persons and wait staff who serve you as part of the tour itinerary.

If we should have a step-on guide in certain cities, gratuities may can be offered at time of service. The traditional end-of-trip gratuities to our daily guides and coach driver are not included.

All of our guides are expert in their field and provide excellent service. If you are satisfied with your the guides and drivers then a gratuity is an appropriate way in which to show appreciation. If you wish to give the gratuity, we suggest using the envelope we will provide and handing it to the guide and driver at the end of the tour.

What about a passport and visas?

If you are traveling outside of your home country, you will need a passport that is valid for a full 6 months after the date of the return from your trip.

Dublin: Enjoy the vibrant pubs, eclectic markets, and numerous cultural attractions that make Dublin one of the most interesting small cities in the world. Founded as a Viking settlement at the mouth of the River Liffey, Ireland’s capital city is rich with history and filled with storytellers. Major landmarks include: Christ Church Cathedral (the oldest building in Ireland), the Dublin Castle (which has stood since the 12th Century), the Spire of Dublin, the statue of Molly Malone, Trinity College, and the Guinness brewery. Here  you’ll find cobbled streets, lit with the ruddiness of pubs ringing with Irish folk tunes.  

Belfast: Compact and easy to explore on foot, Belfast is known for its turbulent history as well as an attitude that values having a good time. The city has something to offer everyone, from an international selection of restaurants, bars, and cafes, to a rugged natural splendor.  There are hundreds of pubs in Northern Ireland’s capital, but The Crown is something special and a must for any visitor, located just across the street from the Grand Opera House and our fabulous 4 star hotel.  Also, the birthplace of the Titanic!  We will make a stop at the fabulous Titanic Museum for any who would wish to take a tour here.

The Giants Causeway: The Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles northeast of the town of Bushmills.

Ulster Folk Art Museum: Step back in time and uncover a way of life from 100 years ago. Discover cottages, farms, schools, and shops as you wander through the beautiful parkland of the Folk Museum chatting to costumed visitor guides demonstrating traditional crafts. Climb on and off majestic steam locomotives or experience the sensation of flight in the Transport Museum bursting with horse drawn carriages, electric trams, motorbikes, fire-engines, and vintage cars.  

Cliffs of Moher: Towering heights and crashing waves, ageless legends and endless flurrying birds: the Cliffs of Moher are a natural masterpiece. These breathtaking sea cliffs are located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare, Ireland. They run for about 14 kilometres.

County Kerry: A county in the South-West Region of Ireland, Kerry is one of the most mountainous regions of Ireland. It faces the Atlantic Ocean and features many peninsulas, inlets, and islands, resulting in a breathtakingly picturesque landscape. Kerry is as close as one can get to the mythical Ireland: A Celtic kingdom of misty mountains promised by glossy brochures and Hollywood films. **

Dingle Peninsula: Located in County Kerry and comprising Europe’s westernmost point, the Dingle Peninsula features stunning views, natural wonder, and extensive archaeological monuments dating back 6,000 years. This is the sort of fairytale place that one might imagine when reading Celtic folklore and mythology. Many Hollywood movies have been filmed here.  While here you will have an opportunity to take an optional Celtic quilting workshop.

Slea Head Drive: A circular route, beginning and ending in Dingle, which takes in a large number of attractions and stunning views on the western end of the Dingle Peninsula. Slea Head is a well-known and recognized landmark and very scenic viewpoint, with a dramatic view of the Blasket Islands.

Ring of Kerry:  Rolling green hills and sparkling lakes. Sheep and cows grazing in patchwork fields. Unspoiled golden beaches giving way to jaw-dropping cliffs. You will find each turn brings a new treat, from lakes, rivers, waterfalls and castles. This treasure on southwest coast of Ireland really has it all.  

Sheepdog Trials: Enjoy up close and personal viewing of sheepdogs and the sheep they guard.  See how they work, obey commands and take care of their flocks.  This is a rare treat that has been well received by our guests.

Blarney Castle: A medieval stronghold in Blarney, near Cork, Ireland. At the top of the Castle lies the Stone of Eloquence, better known as the Blarney Stone, which legend tells us is a magical stone upon which Irish kings were crowned. 

Waterford Factory:  A manufacturer of crystal, the factory is named after the city of Waterford, Ireland. The origin of crystal production in Waterford dates back to 1783, when George and William Penrose started producing extremely fine flint glass that became world-renowned. Today, skilled craftsmen are on display demonstrating their trade of making the Waterford Crystal. Experience the meticulous process of molding, blowing, cutting, sculpting, and engraving that goes into producing this fine crystal. 

Historic Avoca Mill: Now famed for it’s food and fabulous woven articles, in 1723 this co-operative weaving mill was set up along the banks of the Avoca River. Here, local farmers could grind their corn, and spin and weave their wool for clothing for the local miners. Times were tough in rural Ireland and the mill was soon a vital local resource.

August 18, 2025 – This morning, we will drive north to experience one of Ireland’s popular scenic routes along the coast road. Here you’ll see the “Nine Glens of Antrim” which offer wonderful views of mountains, valleys and coastline. We will stop to view the Giant’s Causeway, an impressive area of hexagonal columns formed over 60 million years ago by cooling lava and has given rise to many legends.    

As we return to the city we will have a driving tour and learn more history about the infamous ‘troubles’ and enjoy a local quilt shop.  Once we are back at our hotel the remainder of the day is free for us to explore the lively city. For those who wish to visit Titanic Belfast, we will arrange a drop off for you here before the remainder of the group returns to the hotel. Overnight Belfast   B

August 19, 2025 – Today, we’ve arranged a special visit at a living history museum, the focus here is on ways of life and traditions of the people of Northern Ireland.   As you enjoy the homes in the village, take note of the Irish quilts that may be on the beds and tables.  Additionally, as time allows we will have a curatorial visit to see some of the antique quilts in their collection.  We will take time for lunch here (on your own) as they serve lovely traditional Irish stews, soups and sweets. We will make our way back to the hotel via Belfast’s favorite quilt and fabric shop. The evening is free for sightseeing, shopping and independent dining.  Overnight Belfast  B 

August 20, 2025- Departing Belfast we will drive south then west across Ireland through the fertile midland region, dotted with farms and marketing towns, where we can see how many Irish people make a living from farming, which is of great importance to the Irish economy. In the early afternoon we be stopping at a wonderful quilt shop or two before arriving in Galway. We spend the night in Galway, be sure to ask at the hotel about walking directions to Galway’s lively Latin Quarter with a multitude of restaurants and shops (about a 15-20 minute  walk away ). August 21, 2025 – A wonderful and active day is planned as we drive around the shores of Galway Bay and through the Burren Country, an unique region of limestone hills where many rare flowers thrive in the sheltered crevices.

We will stop at the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher, a wall of rock that plunges 700 feet to the churning Atlantic Ocean below. Later we will take a ferry to cross Ireland’s Shannon River, ending our day in the charming seaside town of Dingle where we will stay for the next four nights.  This evening will gather for dinner together at the hotel.  Overnight Dingle B, D

August 22, 2025 – After breakfast this morning we will embark on a driving tour of the town of Dingle. With a population of only 1200, Dingle serves a larger population of the surrounding countryside. Situated below Slievanea Mountain, the town faces comfortably onto a sheltered harbor. As a market town and fishing port, Dingle has long been famous for its pubs and many opportunities to enjoy traditional Irish shopping, food and entertainment.

As we travel on the beautiful and noteworthy Slea Head Drive we will discover the beauties of the Dingle Peninsula, made famous by David Lean’s movie, “Ryan’s Daughter.” This is one of the most beautiful areas in all Ireland and is packed with history from about 500 BC. Driving along the south shore of the peninsula we will enjoy vistas of heathery mountains, sandy stretches of beach and rocky headlands.  Along our way we will be able to look across the bay to the Blasket Islands and Dunmore Head. Not to be missed, we will stop and enjoy sheepdog trials, seeing how these intelligent dogs are trained to guard and protect the area’s sheep. Additionally we will have the opportunity to visit houses and remains from Ireland’s famine era.

August 23, 2025 –  Following breakfast today we will enjoy one of Ireland’s most famous and scenic drives is along the Ring of Kerry.   Along our way we will take in some of the most beautiful views of Ireland as we travel on its circular route. August 24, 2025 – We’ve traveled a long way since our adventure began and today is a free day for us to relax, unwind a little and enjoy the beautiful Dingle Peninsula. From walking, to bicycling to fishing, there are many activities that await. August 25, 2025 – We’re off to the Blarney Castle where you will have an opportunity to climb the battlements and kiss the famous “Stone of Eloquence”. August 26, 2025 – After leaving Blarney this morning, we will visit the House of Waterford Crystal to learn about their special glass blowing and cutting process and to see their one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Continuing north through the Irish countryside stopping at the fabulous historic  Avoca Weaving Mill for a mill tour before ending our day in Dublin.  Once we arrive at our city center hotel the remainder of the day is free.  Overnight Dublin B 

August 27, 2025 – Following breakfast we will enjoy a panoramic tour of the city where we will see the prominent historic buildings, monuments and beautiful vistas of the area. Dublin is an ancient settlement, founded by the Vikings in the 9th century. The city has been molded through the centuries with many architectural styles, reflecting the economic, political and artistic influences.  We will make a stop at a favorite fabric shop during this time. After our time here we will return to the hotel and  you are free to enjoy the city on your own, you may wish to make pre-booking arrangements (strongly suggested) to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College. August 28, 2025 – Today you are free to enjoy the sights of Dublin as you wish.  B

August 29, 2025 –Following breakfast, we will depart Dublin and travel north along the coast to Drogheda. We will continue north, driving through the towns of Dundalk and Newry and past the scenic Mourne Mountains driving into Belfast which is situated on the deep inlet of Belfast Lough surrounded by hills.  Once in Belfast we will stop at one of the area’s most friendly and colorful quilt shops before checking into our hotel.   The remainder of the afternoon and evening are for your enjoyment of the area.  With several wonderful pubs just across from our hotel you will find a lovely and traditional spot for dinner.   Overnight Belfast.  B

 August 30, 2025 – Eat well this morning as today we will visit Irelands Quilt Fayre!  This is the largest quilting extravaganza on the Island!! We will enjoy a day long visit at the fayre, however for those who might wish to return to the hotel early, we will have a pick up time arranged.  This evening we will meet together for a Farewell Dinner. Our optional tour to Muckross House and Traditional Farm is planned at the same time as the quilt workshop so that friends and spouses who accompany you will also have an option on this day. 

In the midst of Killarney National Park (Ireland’s oldest National Park) sits Muckross House, a nineteenth century Victorian Mansion. The house stands close to the shores of Muckross Lake, one of Killarney’s three lakes, famed worldwide for their splendor and beauty. Your visit will include a tour of the home and entry to the beautiful gardens.   Additionally, you will have the opportunity to visit Muckross Traditional farm where you will step back into the past and visit a very different Ireland.   This was Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s,  when a trip to the well was still a daily chore and electricity had yet to be introduced to the countryside. Visit three separate working farms (small, medium and large), each complete with animals, poultry and machinery. The farm dwellings are furnished in traditional style, complete with dressers, settle-beds with quilts and meal bins. There is also a Laborer’s Cottage, a Carpenter’s Workshop and a Blacksmith’s Forge.  The craft shop is full of local weavings and crafts and should not be missed!

Below are some answers to frequently asked questions about our trips. If you have any questions which are not answered here or on our FAQ pages for our Tours or Cruises please don’t hesitate to email and I will be happy to get back to you as soon as I can.

Why do people travel to quilt? How often do they travel?

When the terminology “quilt tour” is used, I suppose it does conjure up the vision of ladies and gentlemen traveling to work on quilt. However, quilts and/or textiles are the passion that often brings the group together, and there is not always an active quilting component on every group.

 

The purpose for the experience varies from group to group. I have groups of quilt and textile historians that travel to see historic pieces while other groups travel to shop for exotic and hard to find fabrics. Still, others travel for the fellowship with those who share their enthusiasm. It seems that when one exists, often the actual quilting project is not as important as spending time with others who have a built in connection through quilts and quilt-making.

How often they travel often depends upon their economic and family situation. I have some clients who have been on many of our trips, others who travel with me once a year, and some who look at a single tour as a way to a brief respite from the ordinary.

What are the essentials/basics of a quilt/textile cruise or tour?

Outside of providing value in a quilt and textile related vacation experience, inspiration is the key essential on any trip; this is found in many ways. Quilters and textile enthusiasts are often inspired by landscapes, museum visits, quilts and textiles they see, by sharing with each other and the bonds they make with their fellow travelers. While the focus of any itinerary is inspired by quilts, a theme is often important in terms of how local quilt-making customs or historic textiles relate to the community that is being visited. One activity that most everyone looks forward to is any opportunity to shop for unusual or locally produced fabrics that will further inspire their quilt-making once they return home.

 

On our quilt history tours, for those who are historians, I feel it is important to include visits to historic archives and provide unusual opportunities to see antique quilts that are not often available for public viewing. An essential element for me then as a quilter as well as a quilt historian is to have a professional relationship with my colleagues within these institutions as this often opens doors to archives where we would not otherwise have access.

I believe it is helpful when the planner is knowledgeable about quilts and spends time with quilters in areas not surrounded by travel. As a quilter, show judge, appraiser and author, I spend a lot of time around quilts and quilt-makers. This helps me know their special interests and my tours are planned specifically around these things; they are not tours planned and then marketed to those who make quilts. In order for them to produce results, I have noticed a number of “quilt tour” providers that have hired a guest quilter to accompany a land tour group. Many times, this may seem like a benefit to the traveler, but, just as often, an additional cost is added to the tour in order to pay for the famous named guest who is coming along. I will not burden my travelers with those types of additional charges. If I feel that having such a guest would benefit a group or the overall tour experience, I will have one, but it is not a factor I often consider.

 

It is also important to have knowledge of class and workshop limitations. When planning actual quilting classes the planner should be aware of time constraints, materials and the facility suitability to the project.

I believe my most popular destinations to date have been Ireland, France and Bali, each for different reasons. The beauty of Ireland speaks for itself and we enjoy many scenic vistas along our way. Additionally, we stop at quilt shops up and down the Emerald Isle.  Often, we’ve been compared to an “Irish Quilt Shop Hop”. France is known in history for its contributions to both the fabric and quilt world, and Bali for its exquisite batik fabrics and special culture.

 

Our most popular cruises have been the ones that go to Alaska, the European Christmas Markets or international destinations such as the Baltic or Asia.

 

The most popular activity by far is shopping. I try to plan tours that not only offer rewarding textile experiences but also provide a truly memorable experience. Most of my travelers choose a destination they have always wanted to visit.

What is it about World of Quilts Travel that you would like to share?

As a quilter and travel enthusiast, I plan each tour as if I am planning it for myself or my family. I take every stop into consideration. It sometimes takes weeks or longer to create the perfect itinerary. To me, travel is about the total experience as well as providing a good value and I do all that I can to keep the travel experience affordable. I am not a large travel agency; all of my group travel experiences are simply about quilts and textiles.

 

When selecting a quilt tour or cruise provider, it is important to note there may be others who promote quilt trips that will happen to coincide with their other special-interest group tours. While it might be a fun group I believe that it might be surprise for a group of 10 quilters to find themselves sharing a motor coach with poker players (this has happened). This would be a convenient way for some to fill a coach, but I do not mind keeping my groups small. I find when everyone in a group shares the same passion, bonding is almost instant. Always ask your quilt tour provider if they are promoting the same tour or cruise to any other type of hobby or interest group.

 

I promote quilt related travel simply for the joy of sharing the world of quilts and textiles with others. I love to travel – and what better way is there to see things than with others who share similar interests.

Who travels on your tours?

Our travelers are of all ages and from all parts of the world. They share a passion for quilts and quilting, textiles, arts and crafts, and share a desire to connect with the lives and cultures in the places they visit. Many who travel with us are first time travelers, while others have done a lot of travel in the past but are looking for something unique that they can’t organize on their own and/or enjoy the company of others with the same interests. The age group of our tour participants ranges from around 35 to 85 years of age but we have had travelers from 13 up join our groups.

Can husbands or companions join a quilt or textile focused tour?

Yes absolutely – although we focus on quilts and textiles there is always something else for those with other interests to do or see. In general, about 20 – 25% of our groups are companions in this category. We always have husbands who come along, so if you want to bring yours, chances are he will not be the only one.

What if I don’t want to participate in the various visits, educational opportunities or hands-on classes?

While Deb does provide a variety of visits, hands-on classes and workshops they are not mandatory. This is your vacation; you may do whatever you like. While the activities are designed for every level and many are purely for fun and interaction with the local people, if there are any activities that you don’t want to do – just let us know and we will suggest alternative activities for you or you may adventure out on your own.

How fit do I have to be to join a tour?

Some of the tours do have periods that require active walking and a few may feature extended coach or train rides (greater than 4 hours) We have found that most people of normal fitness and mobility are able to participate fully. Those who may have difficulty walking may participate at a level comfortable to them. Please see our terms and conditions regarding health issues. Because we are not aware of any individual’s health condition, we do ask that you receive an okay from your health practitioner to participate on any of our tours.

What if I’m a single traveler?

Our groups are a mix of single travelers, couples and friends. If you are a solo traveler and wish to share with someone we will attempt to find someone else on the tour who wishes to share a room. If there is no one wanting to share the only difference in your cost is that of the single room supplement that we pay to our hotels or you may choose not to participate with a full refund of your deposit.

Do you provide travel protection?

Yes, we provide travel protection through several suppliers. On your trip web page, a link is provided to the travel insurance coverage which will also provide you with information about the insurer. You may choose to purchase travel protection through us, or from any provider of your choice. There are many online travel insurance options available to you.

Is travel protection mandatory?

No, we provide it as an option to you, or you can purchase it from any travel insurance provider. However, because unexpected things do happen, we strongly suggest that you have coverage.

Is my deposit refundable?

Yes, your deposit is completely refundable (less a $100 administration fee, $200 administration fee if on a Viking Cruise) if you change your travel plans and cancel up to 45 days prior to the final payment deadline. Please refer to our terms and conditions for additional tour or cruise refund rules.

When do I have to make the final payment for the trip?

Final payment is approximately 90 days prior to the beginning of any cruise or tour. You will receive an invoice by email about 30 days prior to the deadline.

How do I pay?

You may pay with a personal check (if you reside in the US), money order, cashier or bank check (if you reside outside of the US) or, you may use PayPal or Google Pay. Please note, the quoted tour price includes a 3% discount for those paying in by check. Those who choose to pay through PayPal using a credit card will not receive this discount.

What if I wait to sign up for the trip after the final payment deadline?

You may still sign up for the trip after the final payment deadline, providing there is still space available. We will need your payment in full at the time your register however.

Will I need a passport?

You are required to have a passport valid for six months past your tour date for trips outside your country of citizenship.

Will I need to get immunizations?

Most of our tours do not require special immunizations, but some do. Your health care provider is the best judge as to what you may need for your trip. To guide you as to possible immunizations suggested for your itinerary, please refer to http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel.

How soon should I book my tour?

We suggest booking your tour as soon as you know you want to go. Because we try to keep our groups small, we have limited capacity (often times we will only take 25). Several of our tours sell out within a month of being made available. We hate to have anyone disappointed.

How many do you take on a tour?

It’s not our goal to fill a 50 seat bus. We like to hold our land based tours to about 25 guests.

What about my flight?

For tours where she feels that the group arriving together is beneficial, Deb will include a choice to have group air included or a land only option, this information is always on individual tour information page.

However many people would rather not have to take an extra day of travel in order to meet in one departure location to join the group, so because of many requests, Deb has developed what she calls a “FREE to FLY” program. With this program, you may depart from your home city to wherever our tour begins (and even go a day or two early, it’s up to you). By providing this program, it allows you to depart from the city of your choice, using mileage plans or points if you prefer, and not have the hassle of having to meet up with a group at an appointed group departure airport. You leave when you want and from where you want. It also works for coming home too; if you want to stay on a few days, there is no problem as you are not bound by group departure schedules.

Do you provide airport transportation to the hotels?

Unless your tour begins at the designated airport, we allow you to provide your own transportation to the hotel. So many times our guests arrive at different times and on different days we find it is best for our guests to arrange their own transportation.

Will you help us with airport accommodations if we want to come early or stay late?

Yes, we will assist in booking your room for an extension on either end by providing the contact details to the hotel for you to make these arrangements. However, we cannot guarantee availability.

What kinds of accommodation will I stay in?

All of our accommodations are handpicked by Deb. Most hotels are at least 4 star and while some do not offer all of the same amenities we ascertain that they provide a very clean, safe, quiet and relaxed atmosphere so you can enjoy your holiday.

We also endeavor to be certain that the majority of our accommodations are located in the town or city center so that it is easy for you to explore when you have some time to yourself. We also try to choose hotels that have restaurants or dining options nearby.

How will I be getting around?

On land tours, we travel by deluxe comfortable and air-conditioned private coaches which allow us the freedom to stop and shop with the locals and take great photos along the way. When we travel by train, whenever possible, we use the Fast Rail service and first class seats. On tours that fly domestically from one area to another these domestic flights will generally be included (see individual tour inclusions) however departure taxes for the domestic flights are additional must be paid by each tour member.

What about the type of food that is available?

Eating is one of the highlights of travel and Deb likes to make sure you get to experience as much local cuisine as you wish. On cruises, all onboard meals are provided and there is an abundant selection to choose from. For our land tours, we always provide breakfast and depending on the area we visit, we include other meals as well. Please see each individual itinerary to see what meals are included. We do not always include all meals as we know it’s fun to go off on your own to explore food options.

Our knowledgeable guides will provide you with recommended restaurants for meals which are not included on the tour. If you have preferences for food, for example vegetarian you just need to indicate that on your booking form and we will look after it for you. When meals other than breakfast are included in your tour beverages are usually ‘extra’s’.

What if I have a special dietary need?

We will make note of this and every attempt will be made to accommodate this. However, we cannot guarantee it at all times. You are the best person to determine what you should eat when making food options. We’ve not had any issues in the past helping those with dietary needs.

Are there any hidden costs?

No, there are no hidden costs. Once you’ve arrived, there is no local payment and your tour cost covers everything except: international flights (unless included in the package), international airport taxes and fuel surcharges, taxis, beverages, personal expenses, meals taken outside the tour group meals, or activities that you undertake to do on your own. Immunizations, Visas and Passport fees are also not included. Everything that is indicated on the individual tour itinerary as ‘included’ is covered by your tour or cruise cost.

What is your smoking policy?

Smoking is not allowed on motor coaches. Hotels have individual policies.  We ask for the comfort of those who do not smoke, that smokers do so in an area away from the group.

Is tipping necessary?

Gratuities are included for all hotel bell persons and wait staff who serve you as part of the tour itinerary.

If we should have a step-on guide in certain cities, gratuities may can be offered at time of service. The traditional end-of-trip gratuities to our daily guides and coach driver are not included.

All of our guides are expert in their field and provide excellent service. If you are satisfied with your the guides and drivers then a gratuity is an appropriate way in which to show appreciation. If you wish to give the gratuity, we suggest using the envelope we will provide and handing it to the guide and driver at the end of the tour.

What about a passport and visas?

If you are traveling outside of your home country, you will need a passport that is valid for a full 6 months after the date of the return from your trip.
