Our Instructors

Diane Harris (Stash Bandit Quilts) Nebraska

Diane Harris is a scrap quilt specialist. After 11 years as an editor for Quiltmaker magazine, she formed Stash Bandit to help quilters bust through their stash and make quilts that are both unique and beautiful. She never met a fabric she didn’t like. Her work is featured in a variety of publications in the US and abroad. Diane lives on a working farm in rural Nebraska. Learn more at stashbandit.net and on Instagram

Debbie Maddy, Texas

Debbie’s first love has always been fiber of all sorts. She has been and still is an avid garment seamstress as well as quilter. She has enjoyed most of the crafts using a needle and thread of some sort to include embroidery, appliqué, needlepoint, pulled thread and drawn thread work. Debbie has been quilting over 35 years, pattern designing for 15 years and teaching/lecturing for 20 years. She has been featured on national television as well as online classes. Debbie’s most recent endeavors have been in the world of fabric and fiber dyeing of all kinds but most specifically Shibori and Indigo dyeing. In order to learn to try and master the shibori and indigo dyeing techniques to the best of her abilities, she has studied under some of the most prestigious artists in Japan, England and the US. She will never be a master shibori artist or indigo dyer but loves the entire process. In order to learn from the original masters, Debbie has traveled to Japan for two extended trips for study. She has been taught how to pleat, fold and stitch for Katano shibori. On her last trip she was very fortunate to see the art by Mokohiko Katano. Debbie has studied with a master katazome dyer. While in Japan she was taught all methods of shibori except itajimi. At home in her studio Debbie does all the necessary and very time-consuming stitching, folding and wrapping of the fabrics. She then dyes the fabrics in natural indigo vats. After the fabric is finished, it is sent to Japan to a mill owned by Japanese people and is reproduced to the highest standards. In 2019 Debbie visited the mill owner in Kyoto. Debbie is very impressed with the kindness and gift of sharing that she has experienced from the Japanese people. Japan is a beautiful county with inspiration everywhere and thoughtful and caring people. She hopes to return to study more. We all hope you will enjoy the fabrics. Debbie loves traveling to teach and speak for guilds and shops around the country. She dyes and sells items to wear and decorate with and is thrilled and honored to be a part of the Moda Fabrics designer family. Debbie also loves the art of jewelry making, especially working with sterling silver and vintage elements. She searches for vintage elements wherever she travels. She is excited to meet you on our Hawaii journey!

Dana Michele (Wild Fire Designs) Alaska

Dana had the fortune to grow up in her grandparent’s fabric shop, the Kenai Fabric Center, since I was 10 days old in Kenai, Alaska. Growing up in that creative environment has really shaped her life. Art classes were always my favorite subjects in school and over the years I’ve worked in various media including, painting, photography, wheel-thrown ceramics, silk screening, fresco, fine art restoration and of course various techniques in sewing and quilting. I began my college career studying art history and restoration in Florence, Italy, but finished up with a BA in Anthropology from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
While in college she worked part-time at my family’s quilt shop and found that I was pretty good at making samples, particularly those involving raw-edge applique techniques. This was also when I began my love affair with batiks, which have always reminded me of watercolors. After graduation I worked in the local museum and tribal archive for many years, but continued to help my family make up samples for their store. In 2007 I decided to try making a design of my own. At that time there weren’t any designs with caribou available, so that was my first subject – to fill that gap for Alaska quilt shops.  In late 2010 I had my first opportunity to work directly with Hoffman California Fabrics using some of their floral prints. Since that time I have exclusively used their batiks and prints in my designs. Their batiks are of the highest quality and perfect for the raw edge applique technique I use. In 2016 I was fortunate enough to design my first Signature Batik collection with Hoffman, and I am currently working on new Hoffman Collections.

2025 Hawaii Cruise Classes

We are shaking things up in the quilt cruise world. Now – you may choose how you cruise by signing up for classes or open sewing time.  Having a dedicated room just for those who want to sew as they wish opens up a whole new sea of possibilities.  Come relax and sew your days away during our incredible Hawaii quilt cruise getaway.  We are providing top of the line Bernina machines on this cruise as well as a Bernina machine expert so you don’t even need to thread your own needle!

Everyone will sign up for workshops at the same time, giving everyone the same opportunity to choose their favorites.

Workshop registration: Detailed class request forms will be emailed to all those who have signed up as quilters.  You should receive these request forms by September 15, 2024. You will be able to select one class each at sea day.  A full day open sewing workshop will also be offered on each at sea day.  Space is limited.

Don’t delay in booking, this cruise will sell out quickly – we have had many requests for this itinerary.

There is a minimum number of participants for each class just as there is a maximum number of students we can take in a class. We are allowing for social distancing in the classrooms so our maximum number is not what we have had in the past.    The machine provider asks that NO MACHINE QUILTING be done on the provided machines.

Don’t despair, you may take as many or as few classes as you like when they are offered – OR you may sew in our dedicated sewing room, the choice will be yours.  Your only limitation will be class  or open sewing # of seats size (the number of students per class). Please understand, all class requests are sent out at the same time, we cannot hold classes for anyone prior to that date.

See you in San Diego!  at

Log Jam, easy piecing, big impact

Log Jam – 1 day class

Log Jam: Easy Piecing, Big Impact

It’s great to have one pattern in your bag of tricks that uses big patches so the fabric’s design can be fully appreciated! Log Jam is a 63″ x 72″ throw that comes together quickly, and its generously-sized format packs a punch. If your cutting is done before class, you may get the top sewn in one day! Choose a color recipe of one, two or three colors and bring lights, mediums and darks that work together as detailed below.

Supplies:

  • 18 dark background fabric strips cut 3½” x WOF (width of fabric)
  • 18 medium and light fabric strips for outer logs cut 3½” x WOF
  • 18 dark, medium and light fabrics cut 3½” x 13½” for innermost logs

For later:

  • Binding ⅝ yard
  • Batting 71″ x 80″
  • Backing 4 yards Pattern required, available in class: $12

Basic sewing supplies and notions: Pins, rotary cutter, small cutting mat. Square rotary ruler 6½” x 6½” is helpful for trimming.

Asterisk: Looks Hard, Sews Easy!

Asterisk – 1 day class

Asterisk: Looks Hard, Sews Easy!

These blocks are more fun than should be legal! There has never been a more enjoyable, more addictive design. Karen Griska engineered these easy blocks to look complex.

Learn the technique and then combine the blocks into a smashing design of any size you choose. Asterisks make a great scrap quilt, or you can choose a more controlled color recipe. Several ideas for color combos are shared. Also learn about value, scale and texture. A day of pure sewing bliss!

These blocks are more fun than should be legal! There has never been a more enjoyable, more addictive design. Karen Griska engineered these easy blocks to look complex.

Supplies:

Each block takes two contrasting fabrics: one square scrap 7″x7″ and one strip 1″ x WOF. Do enough pre-cutting for about 15 blocks. Be sure to include darks, mediums and lights. Each pair of fabrics should be very different from each other so the Asterisk shows up clearly against its background.

Asterisk can be completely scrappy or you can control the scrappiness by using a recipe like all blues or all reds. You could also choose two colors and use only those in darks, mediums and lights. Don’t stress too much over the fabric choices, just bring what you’ve cut and we’ll dig right in. I’ll bring some things to share with you!

Bring: Pins, rotary cutter, small cutting mat. Square rotary ruler 6½” x 6½” is helpful for trimming.

UFO Bonanza: Solve Your Project’s Problems

UFO Bonanza: Solve Your Project’s Problems  1 day class

Twenty years ago, someone suggested a UFO class so quilters could get help with their problems on unfinished projects. I’ve been sharing it with filled-up classrooms ever since. Bring any UFOs (that’s quilter-language for UnFinished Objects) you’d like to jump-start and move toward a finish. Whether it’s lost pattern parts, faulty instructions, a technique beyond your skills, fabrics you hate or simply lost motivation, in this workshop you’ll get the help you need to restart, reinvent or reimagine your quilt and advance toward the finish line.

Supplies:

  • Bring up to three UFOs you’d like help with.
  • Bring the pattern if you still have it, and all the parts and pieces of the project you can find.
  • Bring any fabric you bought for it, and if possible, a few additional fabrics that roughly coordinate with it.
  • Do you have any orphan blocks or parts that might be combined with your UFO? Bring them too.
  • Bring a sense of adventure and a seat belt because this can be a wild ride! A ridiculous amount of fun!

Tango: Fun, Easy, Scrappy Adventure

Tango: Fun, Easy, Scrappy Adventure  1 day class
Easy piecing has never been so entertaining! The extraordinary Tango features
graphic blocks that look hard but sew easily. This is a great stashbuster, and you
can use precut squares if you like. Learn about value, contrast, line and
scale—ideas you can apply to all your future quilts.

And…SURPRISE! This method yields bonus half-square triangles to use in
another project. We will cover many ideas for how to create with them.  It’s like
getting two-for-one!

Guidelines and Supplies
1. We will start a throw-size Tango quilt
2. Choose a color theme for your quilt. It can be one, two or three colors, or it can be a theme like Christmas or autumn.

OPTION 1:

  • Bring 50 10″ squares of fabrics that fit into your theme. These should be mediums and darks. You can have 50 different fabrics, or as few as 10 fabrics. You’ll like it better if you have more! Select all different kinds within your color scheme: florals, geometrics, plaids, stripes, dots. Bring lots of variety. Dig into your scrap bags, leftovers, and uglies.
  • If you’re unsure about something, bring it along and I will help you!
  • 2¾ yards of a light neutral print to contrast with the fabrics above such as white, cream, tan or light gray. It could be a light color like soft blue or pink. Think of this as your background. Pre-cut this into 96 squares, 5-1/2″ x 5-1/2″

OPTION 2:

  • Bring 50 10″ squares of lights and mediums in your theme.
  • 2¾ yards of a dark neutral to contrast with the above fabrics: charcoal, blackish brown, navy, etc. Think of this as your background. Pre-cut this into 96 squares, 5-1/2″ x 5-1/2″.
  • This technique generates enough bonus units to make a baby quilt or to start another project which can be something completely different from this one. Class includes ideas!

SUPPLIES:

  • Basic sewing supplies: fabric shears, scissors, pins, neutral-colored thread.
  • Basic cutting supplies: mat, ruler, rotary cutter.
  • One ruler should be at least 15″ long, OR Fons & Porter quarter inch seam markers, extra long, you’ll need the 18″; one.
  • Important: A mechanical pencil and a white-lead mechanical pencil if your fabric is dark on the wrong side.

StarQuar Scrap Quilts: Endless Ideas

StarQuar Scrap Quilts: Endless Ideas  1 day class

Cut scraps into one useful patch size and make blocks without any fuss at all. Let Diane Harris of Stash Bandit show you the secrets to great scrap quilts!
Learn a fast and simple way to turn your scrap stash into a gorgeous starry sky—and so much more! Any fabrics work into these quilts beautifully so you can use leftovers or your most favorite fabrics. Concepts include value, contrast, color, scale, difficult prints and more plus many ideas for using these units in a variety of ways. You’ll catch a vision for how diverse fabrics can work together and become something much greater than the sum of their parts. StarQuar scrap quilts could not be more fun!!! Skill level: Confident beginner and beyond.

Supplies
1. Scraps of any and all lights, mediums and darks, minimum size 2½” square blocks; bring a few hundred squares. I will also have precut scrap packs for sale in class, use these instead of or in addition to your own scraps.
2. Marking tools: regular mechanical pencil and a white mechanical pencil
3. Small ruler (at least 4″  long) for marking (square, rectangular or half-inch wide is fine)
4. Sharp fabric shears (no longer than a 4″ blade)
5. Rotary cuter, ruler (4½”; x 18½”; is great for travel) and small cutting mat

Important Preparation:
These blocks are all made from just one patch size: 2½”x 2½”. Before class, cut your scraps into 2 1/2″ squares. You can also cut up fat quarters or yardage or Jelly Rolls, but variety is the key! You can choose a color scheme or you can use all the colors together. I recommend using everything to get started!

Good to know: It takes a total of 6 squares to make one StarQuar unit. I often use 3 of one color and 3 of a different contrasting color. All 3 squares do not have to match exactly. In class I will show you how I iron and cut my scraps to save time.

Hand-Look Binding by Machine + Magic Binding

Hand-Look Binding by Machine + Magic Binding  1 day class

Learn an easy and reliable method for binding your quilts with this technique that looks as pretty as a hand-sewn finish.

You’ll practice all the steps in class and leave well-equipped to bind your next quilt in a fraction of the time. Now you can finish a quilt more quickly and still be proud of the edges. This binding method is fast, sturdy and beautiful. Suitable for all skill levels. In a related technique, learn to apply Magic Binding, which features a small flange of a contrasting color. Easy to do and looks amazing.

Supplies

  • Two fat quarters of any quilting-weight cotton fabric for practice quilt “sandwiches.”

  • Two rectangles of cotton or cotton/wool blend batting about 11″ x 19″. No polyester batting as it’s too puffy.
  • ½ yard of any quilting-weight cotton fabric for binding.
  • One strip of a quilting weight cotton fabric in a contrasting color, cut 1¾” wide by the width of the fabric.

  • Rotary cutter with fresh blade, a rotary ruler 4½” x 18½”, small rotary cutting mat.

Important Preparation: Cut each fat quarter in half so that it’s about 10″ x 18″. Layer fabric, then batting, then fabric using #1 and #2 above to make a practice quilt sandwich. Repeat with the other fabric/batting/fabric set for two practice “quilts” to bind.
Attach walking foot to your sewing machine. Quilt a big X over both practice sandwiches. Then quilt around the sandwich edges, about ½” in from the outside edge. Square up the sandwiches as needed.
Cut 4 binding strips from #3 above, 2-1/4″ x width of fabric. If you know how, join end to end with diagonal seams. If you don’t know how to do that, I will show you in class. Cut 1 binding strip from #3 above, 1½” x width of fabric.

Intro to Improv: Night Lights and Beyond

Intro to Improv: Night Lights and Beyond   1 day class

Get your head around improvisational patchwork in this exciting workshop with Diane Harris, scrap quilt specialist. Learn the basic idea behind improv, which is a fancy way of saying you make it up as you go! Understand how a few guidelines will keep things flat and stable as you unleash your creativity to make something completely unique.

We will begin with stars and then expand to include other familiar blocks. Class will be a challenging day of relaxing fun. Fair warning: Improv patchwork is addictive!

The quilt we’ll use as inspiration is Night Lights. You may create something as small or as large as you like. In the workshop, you’ll gain confidence to make several styles of stars and then see how other common blocks can also be improvised. And together we’ll explore how to make
everything fit together into a flat and quiltable top for a great finish.

We will also talk about the unusual borders of Night Lights and I’ll show you how they’re made
Other concepts we’ll cover include value, contrast, color, scale, density and composition. More than anything else, my goal is for you to fall in love with improvisational piecing and have the confidence to go forward on your own and make something you adore.

Supplies
1. Fabric: Improvisational piecing takes more fabric than traditional piecing because some trial and error is involved. Decide what color your background will be. Gather 12 fat quarters or a sack of scraps in this color. My backgrounds were all lights but darks like navy blue would be gorgeous. From across the room, they should all read as a similar color and value.
2. Stars: Gather bright and happy prints and solids from your stash or scrap bag. Some should be at least 6″ square for star centers. Most of the prints should be small in scale and should contrast with (be very different from) your backgrounds. A dozen fat quarters will get you started. You’ll make more than stars: buckle up!
3. Rotary cutter, small mat and several rulers small and medium.
4. Basic sewing supplies: Straight pins, sharp fabric scissors.
5. Border and binding: Wait.
6. I will bring scraps to share, which always makes it more fun!
7. A sense of adventure is helpful.
Required pattern and instructions: $15

Dancing with My Baby

Dancing with My Baby – 1 day class

Alaska and Hawaii share a special bond being the two States not connected to Mainland USA.  Although we are opposites in many ways, we frequent each other’s homes often; Alaskans migrating south in winter, and Hawaiians migrating north in the summer.  This same migration happens each year for the Pacific humpback whale that spends the frigid winter months in the warm Hawaiian waters, and migrates north to Alaska each summer to cool off.

Japanese Elegance: Koi Pond

Japan’s influence on Hawaii is all around, and my favorite of these (besides the food) are the beautiful koi ponds that are seen at hotels, shopping centers and gardens.  Koi are such elegance beautiful fish, with such a variety of colors.  I love sitting and watching them swim, and I knew I would need to include them in my Japanese Elegance series.

Jellyfish Bloom

Jellyfish Bloom – 1 day class

I absolutely love watching Jellyfish gracefully dance around at aquariums.  They are such incredible creatures and mesmerizing to witness.  That is unless of course it’s on the beach where you’ll want to watch out for that sting!  Jellyfish bloom attempts to create that gentle peace you can find watching these creatures swim, but those little fish better watch out!

Maritime’s Most Wanted: Octopus

Maritime’s Most Wanted: Octopus – 1 day class

One of the most fascinating creatures in the ocean is the octopus.  I just love watching these creatures swim and reach for objects; their tentacles tightly gripping onto whatever they want.  They are both monstrous and beautiful, and continue to be an inspiration to me and a favorite to feature in my ocean themed designs.

Seagulls

Seagulls – 1 day class

Seagulls get a lot of slack from people, but a day at the beach wouldn’t be the same without their calls.  Although they can be a nuisance to some, they are a permanent feature of ocean life and really quite beautiful birds.  This one is sitting atop a post with another ocean themed favorite, the Japanese glass buoy.

Hawaiian Florals: Plumeria

Hawaiian Florals: Plumeria

For me the thing that takes me back to Hawaii in an instant is the smell of plumeria.  These have always been my favorite flowers in Hawaii.  When the plumeria trees are in bloom, the smell of them permeates the wind and the combination of ocean salty air is one of the best fragrances in the world.  This design was made for our cruise to celebrate my favorite Hawaiian flower.

Along the Shores: Sandpipers

Along the Shores: Sandpipers – 1 day class

My mother loves sandpipers, and when I designed the Along the Shores batik line I knew I would have to include these little birds for her.  As I researched the many different types of sandpipers in Alaska and beyond I found the Western Sandpiper to be my favorite because of its cute round little body.  They are found in Alaska in the summer, and winter all along the Pacific coast, occasionally visiting Hawaii.  Just like a true Alaskan.

Hawaiian Florals: Hibiscus

Hawaiian Florals: Hibiscus

Often if you think of items that represent Hawaii the hibiscus flower will be one of the things that come to your mind.  These flowers come in a rainbow of colors and are found everywhere.  Depictions of them are placed on everything from beach towels, to clothing, surf boards and tattoos.  As Hawaii’s State flower, the hibiscus holds its role well representing the beautiful Hawaiian Islands.  This design was made for our cruise to celebrate Hawaii’s most famous flower.

Frequently Asked Questions – Cruises

World of Quilts Travel offers cruises and/or tours with something for everyone. It is Deb’s goal to provide something unique, showing you a different side of travel while sharing her love of quilts, textiles, traditional crafts and culture.

Our adventures are specifically designed for those who have similar interests and provide a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and share this unique experience with like-minded travelers of all ages.

Below are some answers to frequently asked questions about our trips. If you have any questions which are not answered here or on our FAQ pages for our Tours or Cruises please don’t hesitate to email and I will be happy to get back to you as soon as I can.

Why do people travel to quilt? How often do they travel?

When the terminology “quilt tour” is used, I suppose it does conjure up the vision of ladies and gentlemen traveling to work on quilt. However, quilts and/or textiles are the passion that often brings the group together, and there is not always an active quilting component on every group.

The purpose for the experience varies from group to group. I have groups of quilt and textile historians that travel to see historic pieces while other groups travel to shop for exotic and hard to find fabrics. Still, others travel for the fellowship with those who share their enthusiasm. It seems that when one exists, often the actual quilting project is not as important as spending time with others who have a built in connection through quilts and quilt-making.

How often they travel often depends upon their economic and family situation. I have some clients who have been on many of our trips, others who travel with me once a year, and some who look at a single tour as a way to a brief respite from the ordinary.

What are the essentials/basics of a quilt/textile cruise or tour?

Outside of providing value in a quilt and textile related vacation experience, inspiration is the key essential on any trip; this is found in many ways. Quilters and textile enthusiasts are often inspired by landscapes, museum visits, quilts and textiles they see, by sharing with each other and the bonds they make with their fellow travelers. While the focus of any itinerary is inspired by quilts, a theme is often important in terms of how local quilt-making customs or historic textiles relate to the community that is being visited. One activity that most everyone looks forward to is any opportunity to shop for unusual or locally produced fabrics that will further inspire their quilt-making once they return home.

On our quilt history tours, for those who are historians, I feel it is important to include visits to historic archives and provide unusual opportunities to see antique quilts that are not often available for public viewing. An essential element for me then as a quilter as well as a quilt historian is to have a professional relationship with my colleagues within these institutions as this often opens doors to archives where we would not otherwise have access.

I believe it is helpful when the planner is knowledgeable about quilts and spends time with quilters in areas not surrounded by travel. As a quilter, show judge, appraiser and author, I spend a lot of time around quilts and quilt-makers. This helps me know their special interests and my tours are planned specifically around these things; they are not tours planned and then marketed to those who make quilts. In order for them to produce results, I have noticed a number of “quilt tour” providers that have hired a guest quilter to accompany a land tour group. Many times, this may seem like a benefit to the traveler, but, just as often, an additional cost is added to the tour in order to pay for the famous named guest who is coming along. I will not burden my travelers with those types of additional charges. If I feel that having such a guest would benefit a group or the overall tour experience, I will have one, but it is not a factor I often consider.

It is also important to have knowledge of class and workshop limitations. When planning actual quilting classes the planner should be aware of time constraints, materials and the facility suitability to the project.

I believe my most popular destinations to date have been Ireland, France and Bali, each for different reasons. The beauty of Ireland speaks for itself and we enjoy many scenic vistas along our way. Additionally, we stop at quilt shops up and down the Emerald Isle.  Often, we’ve been compared to an “Irish Quilt Shop Hop”. France is known in history for its contributions to both the fabric and quilt world, and Bali for its exquisite batik fabrics and special culture.

Our most popular cruises have been the ones that go to Alaska, the European Christmas Markets or international destinations such as the Baltic or Asia.

The most popular activity by far is shopping. I try to plan tours that not only offer rewarding textile experiences but also provide a truly memorable experience. Most of my travelers choose a destination they have always wanted to visit.

What is it about World of Quilts Travel that you would like to share?

As a quilter and travel enthusiast, I plan each tour as if I am planning it for myself or my family. I take every stop into consideration. It sometimes takes weeks or longer to create the perfect itinerary. To me, travel is about the total experience as well as providing a good value and I do all that I can to keep the travel experience affordable. I am not a large travel agency; all of my group travel experiences are simply about quilts and textiles.

When selecting a quilt tour or cruise provider, it is important to note there may be others who promote quilt trips that will happen to coincide with their other special-interest group tours. While it might be a fun group I believe that it might be surprise for a group of 10 quilters to find themselves sharing a motor coach with poker players (this has happened). This would be a convenient way for some to fill a coach, but I do not mind keeping my groups small. I find when everyone in a group shares the same passion, bonding is almost instant. Always ask your quilt tour provider if they are promoting the same tour or cruise to any other type of hobby or interest group.

I promote quilt related travel simply for the joy of sharing the world of quilts and textiles with others. I love to travel – and what better way is there to see things than with others who share similar interests.

Who travels on your tours?

Our travelers are of all ages and from all parts of the world. They share a passion for quilts and quilting, textiles, arts and crafts, and share a desire to connect with the lives and cultures in the places they visit. Many who travel with us are first time travelers, while others have done a lot of travel in the past but are looking for something unique that they can’t organize on their own and/or enjoy the company of others with the same interests. The age group of our tour participants ranges from around 35 to 85 years of age but we have had travelers from 13 up join our groups.

Can husbands or companions join a quilt or textile focused tour?

Yes absolutely – although we focus on quilts and textiles there is always something else for those with other interests to do or see. In general, about 20 – 25% of our groups are companions in this category. We always have husbands who come along, so if you want to bring yours, chances are he will not be the only one.

What if I don’t want to participate in the various visits, educational opportunities or hands-on classes?

While Deb does provide a variety of visits, hands-on classes and workshops they are not mandatory. This is your vacation; you may do whatever you like. While the activities are designed for every level and many are purely for fun and interaction with the local people, if there are any activities that you don’t want to do – just let us know and we will suggest alternative activities for you or you may adventure out on your own.

How fit do I have to be to join a tour?

Some of the tours do have periods that require active walking and a few may feature extended coach or train rides (greater than 4 hours) We have found that most people of normal fitness and mobility are able to participate fully. Those who may have difficulty walking may participate at a level comfortable to them. Please see our terms and conditions regarding health issues. Because we are not aware of any individual’s health condition, we do ask that you receive an okay from your health practitioner to participate on any of our tours.

What if I’m a single traveler?

Our groups are a mix of single travelers, couples and friends. If you are a solo traveler and wish to share with someone we will attempt to find someone else on the tour who wishes to share a room. If there is no one wanting to share the only difference in your cost is that of the single room supplement that we pay to our hotels or you may choose not to participate with a full refund of your deposit.

Do you provide travel protection?

Yes, we provide travel protection through several suppliers. On your trip web page, a link is provided to the travel insurance coverage which will also provide you with information about the insurer. You may choose to purchase travel protection through us, or from any provider of your choice. There are many online travel insurance options available to you.

Is travel protection mandatory?

No, we provide it as an option to you, or you can purchase it from any travel insurance provider. However, because unexpected things do happen, we strongly suggest that you have coverage.

Is my deposit refundable?

Yes, your deposit is completely refundable (less a $100 administration fee, $200 administration fee if on a Viking Cruise) if you change your travel plans and cancel up to 45 days prior to the final payment deadline. Please refer to our terms and conditions for additional tour or cruise refund rules.

When do I have to make the final payment for the trip?

Final payment is approximately 90 days prior to the beginning of any cruise or tour. You will receive an invoice by email about 30 days prior to the deadline.

How do I pay?

You may pay with a personal check (if you reside in the US), money order, cashier or bank check (if you reside outside of the US) or, you may use PayPal or Google Pay. Please note, the quoted tour price includes a 3% discount for those paying in by check. Those who choose to pay through PayPal using a credit card will not receive this discount.

What if I wait to sign up for the trip after the final payment deadline?

You may still sign up for the trip after the final payment deadline, providing there is still space available. We will need your payment in full at the time your register however.

Will I need a passport?

You are required to have a passport valid for six months past your tour date for trips outside your country of citizenship.

Will I need to get immunizations?

Most of our tours do not require special immunizations, but some do. Your health care provider is the best judge as to what you may need for your trip. To guide you as to possible immunizations suggested for your itinerary, please refer to http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel.

I am hoping that some of these answers to frequently asked questions about our cruises and cruise events will help you learn more about our programs, if not, please feel free to ask your questions by emailing me at info@worldofquiltstravel.com and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

How soon do I need to register?

We suggest that you register as soon as you know you want to join us. Many of our cruises categories (sometimes including the entire ship) sell out quickly and we have disappointed would be travelers.

What cruise lines do you use?

We only use cruise lines that have universally high ratings and are also “quilter” friendly, in that they allow us to hold classes and related events without much restriction. Generally, we use the following cruise lines: Princess, Holland America and on river cruises we utilize the services of Viking

Do you provide sewing machines?

Yes, whenever they are required for a project, we provide them. We use a variety of dealers, Bernina, Janome, Brother, etc. Not familiar with the machines? No worries as we also provide technical support for the machines during the entire time that machines are in use. You will never even have to thread a needle or wind a bobbin on one of our quilting cruises, our support technicians are always there to assist you in any way so that you have an enjoyable experience.

Is there an opportunity to sew when class is not in session?

Yes, we provide ample open sewing time each evening and at other times when class is not in session. During this time you may work on anything you wish, including  Make-it/Take-it projects or demos when they are offered.

How do I choose my cabin?

We offer inside, ocean view (window) and balcony cabins. If there are suites available to us, we will offer these as well. We will book you in the best available cabin in the category you choose – guaranteed. If you would like to request a certain cabin you may, however, it may not be in our block or it may outside of our pricing category. If this is the case we will do what we can to get you the cabin of your choice for the additional cost of the cabin. However, the reason we like to ‘guarantee’ you the best cabin in a category rather than make a choice on a particular cabin as this gives you a better chance of receiving a complimentary upgrade. If you would like us to try to book a particular cabin for you, please indicate this on the registration form.

What about my flight?

As our cruises leave from departure ports from all over the world and our guests also come from many areas, it is impossible for us to arrange a group flight for cruises. However, this also allows you to fly when you want and from where you want at the best price you can find. It is also a way to use your airline miles or points. We will notify you as soon as we know that our cruise is a ‘go’ so that you may look for the best airfare that suits you. If you would like us to book your air for you, upon request, we are happy to do this, just let us know. We will also arrange transfers between the airport and the ship when you select the appropriate box on the registration form. If you do not wish to make your own air arrangements, we are happy to assist you.

Is transportation provided between the ship and the airport?

Cruise lines generally runs buses the day of the cruise for a fee which will be a choice for you on your registration form. If you are coming in the day before, you will need to find your own transportation to the hotel and cruise terminal. Many hotels offer free transportation from the airports.

What time do I need to arrive in the departure port city on the day of my cruise?

We ask that you plan to arrive no later than 12 noon on the day of your cruise departure, the earlier the better. Please take into account that there may be flight delays and book your flight so that you have an alternative should this occur.

What time should I book my flight to leave for home once the cruise is over?

On the day of embarkation, cruise lines suggest not booking flights that depart before 12 noon.

What if I want to arrive a day or two before the cruise departs?

Frequently we will include a pre-cruise hotel option and this will be indicated on the cruise information page or the information will be sent to you in a separate email. Otherwise, we can provide the name of suitable hotels for you to make a reservation.

How do I register for shore excursions?

Once we receive your registration, we book you with the cruise line and email you your booking number. From here, you may go onto the cruise line website to review and book your shore excursions directly with the cruise line. Wherever possible, we will arrange custom shore excursions to suit the interest of the group. When we do this, this will be indicated on the cruise web page or included in a special email.

What is included in the price of my quilting cruise?

If you are a quilter, in addition to the cruise, your cruise includes onboard quilting parties and events, workshops and sewing machines are included in the price. If a teacher has a kit or a required pattern and there is an additional fee the cost will be payable directly to the teacher. Information on kits or other materials, including price, will be listed on the website where class information is available.

To be certain of what we do include, everything that is indicated on the individual cruise itinerary pricing page and is listed as ‘included’ is covered by your quilter cruise cost.

How do I choose my classes or workshops?

About 90 days prior to departure, we will send out a class enrollment form by email. You will choose your classes and submit the form to us any time after this date. Classes will be filled on a first come first serve basis. Most get their first class choices, rarely does anyone not get their first or second choice.

What about dining?

Cruise ships offer several dining options. Except for dinner, these are very flexible. Unless a sponsor of a cruise requests that everyone dine together, we request flexible (anytime) dinner dining for everyone. This way, you may eat when and where you want, even in the dining room where you will have the same menu as those who participate in an early or late dinner service.

What about formal nights?

Cruise ships will indicate how many formal or gala nights they have on a cruise on their own registration pages. We will try to indicate the formal nights on our cruise event calendar, however they are subject to change, and frequently cruise lines do change this night sometime during the cruise. Changes such as this are out of our control. The number of formal nights differ for each cruise line and cruise itinerary. Formal or gala nights are optional, meaning if you do not wish to dress in what is referred to as cocktail or formal attire, then you may dine somewhere of your choice other than the main dining rooms. For those wishing to join the Formal Night dinner festivities, we suggest that ladies bring a pair of black pants and a dressy top or cocktail dress. For men, a jacket is minimally required.

What about tips?

Cruise lines will automatically charge a set amount (around $13-15 a day per person) to your shipboard account to cover tips for your room steward and dining room staff. Once the cruise begins, you are free to make an adjustment to this amount at any time by submitting a form that the ship’s front desk will supply.
