Our Instructors

Cindy Grisdela

I’m intrigued by color, line, and shape, just like any other artist. Working with fabric like a painter works with paint, I create dynamic contemporary compositions, cutting the shapes out freehand without a pattern or template and sewing them together with my sewing machine.

The color is the first step. I usually begin with a color idea—maybe bright saturated colors, or grays with black and white, or even a neutral palette.

I’m known now for my fearless approach to color, but it wasn’t always that way. In my early days as a quilter, I made traditional quilts from patterns and I was intimidated by color, so I made a lot of blue quilts! But gradually I became more comfortable with putting colors together in combinations that were pleasing to me, and I started challenging myself to use colors that I don’t normally use. Some of those turned out to be my favorites.

There’s a reason I chose to create my art in fabric and thread rather than paint, and that’s the opportunity to add texture to my compositions with the stitching lines. It’s that tactile nature of quilts that drew me to creating in this way, and keeps me excited about going into the studio every day.

I stitch all the lines with my sewing machine, some with freehand motifs and others with straight or wavy lines with my walking foot. There’s no computer program or marking ahead of time that does that part for me. As I stitch, I feel that texture coming to life under my fingers. Some of the pieces have dense motifs stitched into the various shapes of the design, while others have irregularly spaced lines. It all depends on what the composition seems to want or need.

I come from a long line of women who have expressed themselves using a needle and thread, although there were no quilters in my family. Creating with various forms of fabric and thread has been a part of my life since I was a child, and I am self taught as a fiber artist, with lots of experimentation along the way with mentors from books, like the late Gwen Marston, and in person, like my studies with Nancy Crow. My formal education includes a BA in Fine Arts from the College of William and Mary and an MBA from George Washington University.

JO LYNN O’NEIL – Texas

This is Jo Lynn’s third cruise with World of Quilts Travel. Here classes on previous cruises have filled completely.

Jo Lynn has been quilting many years and is versitile in many styles and techniqes.  She is able to adapt on the spot for beginning and advanced quilters and has taught throughout the US.

A certified Laura Heine Collage quilt instructor, Jo Lynn has mastered the Laura Heine collage technique that makes her collage designs so unique.  Jo Lynn’s collage workshops are very popular and sell out quickly.

For any question on her workshops, you may reach Jo Lynn  at jolynn.oneil@gmail.com

SUE SPARGO – Ohio

Southern Africa had a considerable influence on Sue’s life and creativity. She was born in Zambia and educated in South Africa, spent time in England, moved through four US states and is currently settled in Ohio.

Sue always felt drawn to the color, energy and simplicity of traditional African designs. This, along with the stark contrasts between the many environments she has lived, combined to stir her love of “primitive” arts and crafts and grew into a focus on contemporary folk-art. Working in a bright, saturated color palette, Sue creates her pieces with layers using hand-dyed wools, cotton fabrics, linens, silks, velvets and embellishment stitchery. As an international author and teacher, Sue’s workshops range from 2 to 5 days and explore textual depth and dimension through wool layering and embroidery. Sue’s publications consist of technique and pattern books, and her extensive website is a treasure trove of products that support her designs. (https://suespargo.com)

Sue Spargo Folk-art Quilts, Inc. currently employees 10 full time staff to oversee her retail and wholesale websites, Block of the Month program, publications and dye studio. We are a family team who’s goal is to provide our customers with a unique but complete product; hand and mill dyed wools that match our Ellana wool appliqué thread, a vast range of embroidery threads including Sue’s line of Eleganza Perle cotton, an eclectic mix of cotton and textural fabrics, patterns, technique books and kits.”

For any questions on her workshop, you may reach Sue at info@Suespargo.com

SUJATA SHAH – California

Sujata Shah, a graphic designer and textile artist, is originally from Mumbai, India. The mother of three grown children lives with her husband in San Francisco Bay area.
She has won awards for her quilts in local and national quilt shows and designed quilt patterns under the name of Rangoli Designs. Her teaching experiences include workshops inspired by the quilts of Gee’s Bend, needle-turn applique based on her original designs and color and design workshops in Seattle area and Philadelphia. Her quilts have been shown at AQS in Lancaster and Padukah and the Pacific Northwest Quilt-Fest.

In 2003, She found an instant connection between the abstract utilitarian quilts of Gee’s bend and Godharis from India. Her instinctive ability to work with colors and textures combined with education in graphic design has helped her develop a unique style as a designer.

She draws her inspirations from imperfections and irregularities of free-spirited folk art and crafts from around the world. As a calligraphy major, she believes that each handmade craft has a stamp of the maker. In 2014 she wrote the book, Cultural Fusion Quilts – A Melting Pot of Piecing Traditions. In which she introduced free-form blocks, an abstract interpretations of traditional quilt blocks to reflect her theory.

Talking about the process of finishing quilts, she says, ”I find hand stitching therapeutic and nourishing to the soul. Through my quilts I remain connected to my past, my culture and heritage. More I hand stitch, stories of my daily life get stitched into my quilts. I rarely have a plan before the start of a quilt. Designing a quilt is an evolving process. I believe as the quilt evolves, I simply become the instrument in the making of that quilt.

ILARIA PADOVANI – Italy

ILARIA PADOVANI
Ilaria Padovani grew up in Italy, where sewing, knitting and crocheting were part of her life since the age of four. Thanks to her grandmother, she learned very fast to get things right. If the work was not done the right way, it had to be undone and remade until perfect.

Since leaving Italy in 1999, Ilaria has been living in many different countries – including the US, Ireland and the UK. However, it was in 2003, while in State College, PA that she become fascinated with quilt making, owing to a guild of traditional quilters who took her under their wing. During those formative years, Ilaria developed a passion for hand sewn projects – hand appliqué, English Paper Piecing and Foundation Paper Piecing – which are still her preferred techniques.

In 2014, while living in Bristol where she still resides, it was Ilaria’s love for color and eye for perfection that led her to being recruited to work for Kaffe Fassett, making and coordinating his sample quilts for his popular Patchwork and
Quilting’ books.

As a passionate quilter, maker and traveler, Ilaria loves sharing her expertise through teaching, making her ambition to inspire creativity in others on her art, and loves to travel and meet new people.

For questions about any workshop, write Ilaria at ilapado@yahoo.it

2026 Hawaii Cruise Classes

PLEASE READ:

Choose how you quilt cruise by signing up for classes or open sewing time.  On this cruise, every other at sea day we will have a dedicated room just for those who want to sew as they wish.  Come relax and sew your days away during our incredible Hawaii quilt cruise getaway.  We are providing top of the line Bernina machines on this cruise as well as a Bernina machine expert so you don’t even need to thread your own needle!

You choose your workshop time when you sign up! Workshop sign up forms are available to you after you book AND have chosen the I AM A QUILTER option with your booking.  You may choose any number of workshops by number (#1, #2, #3 etc…  choice) per at sea day.  Free sewing (Open sewing) for independent  or workshop projects will be available on all at sea day evenings.

Don’t delay in booking, this cruise will sell out quickly – we have had many requests to repeat this itinerary.

There is a minimum number of participants for each class just as there is a maximum number of students we can take in a class. We are allowing for social distancing in the classrooms so our maximum number is not what we have had in the past.    The machine provider asks that NO MACHINE QUILTING be done on the provided machines.

Don’t despair, you may take as many or as few classes as you like when they are offered – OR you may sew in our dedicated sewing room on the days they are available, the choice will be yours.  Your only limitation will be class  or open sewing # of machines per room.

Improv Log Cabin

Improv Log Cabin

Make an Improv Block the center of your composition. Add your own borders if you’d like to make it bigger–maybe curved strips or asymmetrical open space–it’s completely up to you to make your quilt your own. This process can be adapted to any size quilt–use your imagination! We will discuss the improv block technique using scraps and different ways to set the block into an interesting design with border options.

SUPPLY LIST

  • Rotary cutter and mat – I like the 60mm rotary cutter, but bring whatever size you like best, with a new blade
  • Rulers—suggest 9” square and 6” x 12”
  • Basic quilting supplies including straight pins, seam ripper,  scissors and/or snips for cutting threads, measuring tape
  • Batting or flannel to use as a “design wall”
  • Notebook and pen or pencil to take notes
  • Digital camera or phone to take photos of design options (optional)
  • Artful Improv by Cindy Grisdela
Fearless Curved Piecing

Fearless Curved Piecing

Take the fear out of curved piecing with two different Improv Circle techniques. There’s no template, no pins, and no matching seams. You’ll be confident with curves in no time!

Class Supply List

  • Learn to piece curves with no templates—even pins are optional.
  • 8-12 fat quarters in a variety of colors that you like together- can be solids or prints or both. Remember to include a range of values—light, medium, and dark. You may also bring scraps that are at least 8.5” square. To make a small wall hanging, you’ll need about 40 squares.NOTE: if you want to make a color wheel quilt like
  • Playing with Colors, you’ll need a wide variety of solids or prints or both (I used batiks) in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. You won’t be able to make all of them in class, so
I suggest either choosing one color to work with or bring 4 fabrics in each color.
  • Rotary cutter and mat – I like the 60mm rotary cutter, but bring whatever size you like best, with a new blade
  • Rulers—suggest 9” square and 6” x 12”
  • Basic quilting supplies including straight pins, seam ripper,
scissors and/or snips for cutting threads, measuring tape
  • Batting or flannel to use as a “design wall”
  • Digital camera or phone to take photos of design options (optional)

Scrapmania
Improv Scrapmania
Use the scraps that you might otherwise throw away and make a unique contemporary design.

Sew your smaller scraps into Improv Blocks or add skinny lines to larger scraps to make units that go together like a puzzle. There are no right angles or straight lines unless you want there to be! We’ll focus on sewing our units together using expressive lines–gentle curves that follow the shape of the elements used, rather than a hard squaring off process. You can also use leftover or orphan blocks in your composition if you like.

Supply List
• Sewing Machine with manual – with a ¼” foot (required)
• Rotary cutter – I like the 60mm rotary cutter, but bring whatever size you like
best, with a new blade
• Cutting Mat –I like 24” x 36”
• Rulers if desired—we won’t really be using them much
• Basic quilting supplies including straight pins, seam ripper, neutral thread,
scissors and/or snips for cutting threads, and measuring tape
• Batting to design and transport your quilt
• Paper and/or notebook for making notes, sketches, and drawings about your quilt
if desired
• Digital camera or phone with the ability to take pictures
• Blue painter’s tape
• *optional but helpful – Artful Improv: Color Recipes, Building Blocks & Free Motion Quilting and/or Adventures in Improv Quilts by Cindy Grisdela
• Fabric – Strips and scraps of cotton fabric in solids, or fabrics that read as solids, such as tone on tone and small-scale prints. You may include some print fabrics too but recommend avoiding large scale prints. If you don’t have strips and scraps handy, you can bring fat quarters, charm packs, layer cakes, or jelly rolls.

Remember to have a range of values—lights, mediums and darks.

Remember that part of the fun is to make do with what you have. Sometimes limitations on supplies or fabrics actually enhance our creativity.

Improv Puzzle

Improv Puzzle

Create Improv Log Cabin blocks in a variety of sizes and put them together into a unique composition–like a jigsaw puzzle. There’s no measuring or precise cutting and each quilt will be unique. We will discuss color choices and using simple design principles to create an original dynamic composition.

Supply List

• 8-12 fat quarters in a variety of colors and values (black and white are
additional). You may bring scraps too.
• Rotary cutter and mat – I like the 60mm rotary cutter, but bring whatever size you like best, with a new blade
• Rulers—suggest 9 1/2” square and 6” x 12”
• Basic quilting supplies including straight pins, seam ripper,
scissors and/or snips for cutting threads, measuring tape
• Batting or flannel to use as a “design wall”
• Notebook and pen for taking notes
• Digital camera or phone to take photos of design options (optional)
• Adventures in Improv Quilts by Cindy Grisdela – optional but helpful

Fabrics

Bring fabrics in colors that you like together—for example warm colors like red, orange, yellow or cool colors such as blue, green, purple. Or you can use an “anything goes” color recipe. You don’t need a lot of any one fabric—variety is important. Be sure to include different values of your colors—light, mediums and darks—and consider adding a few fabrics in a contrasting color or value to add an accent. Consider including black and white too.

You can bring all solids or a combination of prints and solids.

Fabulouse Freehand Curves

Fabulous Freehand Curves

Cut large scale curves freehand without templates or patterns. Add dots, skinny lines, wonky triangles and more to give each curve its own personality, then combine them into a fun original design.

We’ll talk about color and design to create the composition as well as the techniques needed.

SUPPLIES
• 8-12 fat quarters (18”x 22”) or equivalent in a variety of values—lights, mediums, and darks – you will cut these into 15” squares, which can be done before class if you wish.
• Rotary cutter – I like the 60mm rotary cutter, but bring whatever size you like best, with a new blade
• Large cutting mat—at least 18” x 24”
• Rulers—suggest 15” square and 6” x 12”
• Basic quilting supplies including straight pins, seam ripper, neutral thread, scissors and/or snips for cutting threads

Class Supply List

Learn to piece curves and stripes with no templates—pins are optional!

• Fat quarters in a variety of colors that you like together- can be solids or prints or both. You may also bring scraps that are at least 9” square. For a quilt like mine, you’ll need 8 warm colors (red, orange, yellow) and 6-8 cool colors (blue, green, purple).
 • Rotary cutter – I like the 60mm rotary cutter, but bring whatever size you like best, with a new blade
• Rotary cutting mat
• Rulers—suggest 6.5” square and 6” x 12”—or your favorite square and
rectangular rulers
• Basic quilting supplies including straight pins, seam ripper,
scissors and/or snips for cutting threads, measuring tape

• Notebook and pen or pencil to take notes
• Digital camera or phone to take photos of design options (optional)
• Adventures in Improv Quilts by Cindy Grisdela – optional but helpful

Color Grid Log Cabin

Color Grid Log Cabin

Use your scraps to piece a colorful Color Grid design using Improv log cabin blocks and neutral backgrounds with skinny black lines. The design can be put together either symmetrically where all the blocks line up, or asymmetrically where none of them do. It’s your choice. The neutral borders with black lines provide an interesting grid-like structure that supports the Improv blocks. Scraps can be all the colors or more structured—only blues, or reds, oranges and yellows, for example. Solids, or prints, or a combination will all work.

Fabric

Strips and scraps of cotton fabric in solids, or fabrics that read as solids,
such as tone on tone and small-scale prints. You may include some print fabrics too but recommend avoiding large scale prints. If you don’t have strips and scraps handy, you can bring fat quarters, charm packs, layer cakes, or jelly rolls. Remember to have a range of values—lights, mediums and darks. Include scraps that are are neutral in value—white, bone, ecru, gray—as well as black to make a quilt like mine.

SUPPLY LIST
Rotary cutter – I like the 60mm rotary cutter, but bring whatever size you likebest, with a new blade
• Cutting Mat –I like 24” x 36”
• Rulers if desired—we won’t really be using them much

Remember, half the fun is using what you already have on hand.

Artful Improv

Artful Improv

Learn to create your own original quilts with no pattern using improvisational piecing techniques. Students will learn to let go of the “rules” and piece blocks in an intuitive, free form fashion and may wish to begin with blocks or other elements left over from previous projects. We will explore contemporary Improv log cabin style blocks, Improv Curves, and Angled Stripes, plus Insets and Curved Strips.

We will discuss color choices and how to use simple design principles to create an original dynamic composition.

Supplies:

  • Rotary cutter and mat – I like the 60mm rotary cutter, but bring whatever size you like best, with a new blade
  • Rulers – suggest 9” square, 6″ x 12″ rectangle, and your favorite long ruler
  • Basic quilting supplies including straight pins, seam ripper, scissors and/or snips for cutting threads, measuring tape
  • Batting to design and transport your quilt
  • Paper and/or notebook for making notes, sketches, and drawings about your quilt.
  • Digital camera or phone with the ability to take pictures
  • Blue painter’s tape
  • *optional but helpful Adventures in Improv Quilts by Cindy Grisdela

Fabric:

You don’t need to buy fabric especially for this class unless you want to. Bring a box or small suitcase of fabrics that you like together, remembering that it’s important to have a range of values from light to medium to dark so you will have contrast in your work.

If you want to be specific, bring fabric representing the color wheel—red, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, turquoise, purple. Also include neutrals including black and white, and brown and gray in a range of values.

Part of the fun is making do with what you have. It’s fine to bring solids, prints or a combination. Scraps or fat quarters are also fine, but you will need some yardage if you want to work with the large free hand cut curves.

Two Color Fusible Reverse Applique

Two Color Fusible Reverse Applique – 1 Day

Choose your favorite two color applique pattern from Pacific Rim Quilt Company to make a delightful reverse applique wall quilt.

You will only need 2 fabrics for this fun and relaxed class where you’ll learn the art of fusible appliqué, a quick and easy technique that’s perfect for quilters of all levels. This method allows you to fuse your fabric pieces in place before stitching, making it a breeze to create intricate designs without the need for precise hand sewing.

All you’ll need are a few fabric pieces and fusible webbing, and you’ll be ready to start. Whether you’re new to appliqué or an experienced quilter looking to try a new technique, you’ll love how accessible and portable fusible appliqué can be.

During class, Jo Lynn will also share tips on design and finishing, plus insights into the history and evolution of appliqué quilting. It’s a great opportunity to relax, sew, and chat with fellow quilters while creating something beautiful.

Come join us for a day of stress-free stitch-free  creativity, and good company!

Supplies

  • Purchase any two color applique pattern by Pacific Rim Quilt Company. You can order online at prqc.com
  • Yardage requirement for quilt is on the back of pattern for requirements for more blocks. About 30” by width of fabric for top fabric and 30” by Width of fabric for back fabric
  • Choose two contrasting fabrics for your quilt top and a coordinating print fabric for the backing, I used Batik fabric but 100% cotton will work.
  • I recommend using wool batting for ease of quilting and beautiful results to show off quilting, you will not need this on the cruise.
  • Wonder Under about 30”
  • Thread for appliqué. I love to use Aurifil 100% cotton #60 thread.  It needs to match the Applique fabric not the background fabric.
  • Thimble
  • Scissors, small and sharp to the point. I like Kai brand scissors—about 3 to 4 inches long, or Karen Kay Buckley with green or blue handles.  You will also need paper scissors.
  • Paper copy of your pattern
  • Marking pencil. I like SewLine.  You must have a color that will contrast with the Applique fabric.
  • You will be preparing this for machine appliqué. That will not be done during class.  I will meet with you during free sew time and demonstrate machine appliqué.  The machines will be available during free sew time for you to appliqué your project.  Bring Thread to match your project.

In this workshop, you’ll have the option to purchase pre-made stamps before the cruise or create your own templates for a personalized experience.

The project—a charming and simple wall hanging—will come together effortlessly as you use spare moments in your busy schedule to work on it. Choose any fabric you like, though using scrap fabric with a unified background can yield especially stunning results.

Join us for a day of stress-free sewing, where you’ll have time to chat and bond with your fellow quilters, all while learning a rewarding, time-honored craft.

SUPPLYS

  • Download and print a copy of Hummingbird pattern! This is a free pattern found on
    https://www.quiltingdaily.com/product/5-free-quilt-patterns-civil-war-quilts/
  • 32 (4” x 6”) rectangles of assorted medium and dark prints for stars
  • ¼ yard light colored for diamonds
  • Border, backing and binding fabric will not be needed on ship.
  • Quilt template stamps by Kate- www.bykate.com She has clear stamps that are very easy to use.
  • I highly recommend these. You will need 2 stamps and an ink pad.
  • If you don’t by stamps you will need template material and scissors to cut it with.
  • Fabric marking pencil such as sew line products in a color that will show on your fabric. You will need something that makes a fine line. Unless you are buying the stamps.
  • Needles-I like sharps/applique #10 Hiroshima by Tulip or Clover Black Gold are  very good. Or bring your favorite hand piecing needle.
  • Hand sewing thread-Aurifil, Mettler, Presencia, or your favorite. Color to match your fabric—I like taupe or gray tones
  • Thimble
  • Scissors sharp to the point. I like the small Kai or the green or blue handle scissors
    by Karen Kay Buckley.
  • A small battery powered light you be helpful. The lighting is not great on the ship!

Traditional Hawaiian Applique 2 days

Traditional Hawaiian Applique

A laid-back and enjoyable class where you’ll explore the beautiful art of Hawaiian appliqué using the needle turn technique. This method is simple and portable—just two colors of fabric and one color of thread are all you need to get started, making it a great project to take with you on the go.

The patterns we will be working with feature gentle curves and soft points, so whether you’re new to appliqué or have more experience, you’ll find this technique both approachable and fun. Throughout the class, Jo Lynn will also share fascinating stories about the history and cultural significance of Hawaiian quilting, giving you a deeper appreciation of this timeless craft.

Come enjoy a stress-free day of sewing, with plenty of time to chat, connect, and relax with fellow quilters. No pressure, just creative fun!

SUPPLY LIST

  • Purchase the pattern, “Tropical II” by Pacific Rim Quilt Company.

Freeform blocks are abstract interpretations of traditional quilt blocks. How would you like to make triangle blocks without templates and marking with as few measurements as possible? See what
happens when you embrace the imperfections and irregularities of human hands. Organic cutting and piecing techniques mimic the appearance of block prints of India. Each block is different from
the next in size, shape and form, yet there is overall harmony and balance to the quilt. You will learn to trust your instinct and eyeballing skills to further explore many possibilities for the final
layout.

Basket Full of Scraps

Basket Full of Scraps

How can you make a crazy quilt crazier? Add a few scrappy baskets on top of it!

In this workshop, early on the focus will be on fabric selection and design development. You will go through the exercise to find balance with textures and colors of small to large scale prints. Working with solids, the emphasis will be on value and contrast. You will learn to make crazy patch background with freeform blocks and string
pieced baskets and their handles. Not interested in baskets? Try bowls, vases or something else. This workshop is a place to learn about scale, contrast, value, and selecting just the right fabric to brighten up the space.

Technique – Machine Pieced, Improv Piecing
Skill Level – Experienced Beginner

SUPPLY LIST

  • Rotary cutter with fresh blade
  • Medium Size Cutting Mat
  • Design Wall or Twin Size Batting
  • Freezer Paper
  • Pins, Scissors, Applique needles
  • Seam ripper
  • Basket Full of Scraps Pattern – required

Fabric Suggestions
Background – Choose a wide variety of textures in the similar color family. Do look to the neighboring color on the wheel to add depth to the background. For instance, if the background is blue, add a range of blues as well as purple and green to create more depth and interest.
You may choose to work with similar textures or mix and match geometric and organic patterns. For example, choose all the plaids or stripes, or mix large and small florals in the mix.

Baskets – Choose contrasting fabrics to the background with some prints also consisting background colors. You are going for a busy look in your quilt but also have some defined baskets on the background. Make sure there is enough contrast of values between background and the baskets. Include a variety of prints and textures like dots,
stripes, and florals.

Yardage

  • Background
Choose assorted small, medium and large scale prints of similar colors, including dots, some plaids and stripes. It is
always a good idea to bring a large variety of fat quarters and 1/2 yards cuts.
  • Baskets
Pick one large print from the background fabrics to use as a starting point to select contrasting colors for the baskets. Choose fabrics with small and medium prints of brighter colors and various textures.
  • Handles
From the fabrics selected for the baskets, cut 8-10 bias strips in lengths of 20″ to 24″ folded and pressed with wrong sides together.

Be prepared to share fabrics with the fallow classmates. You will take home a whole lot more memories than just a
    quilt top.

Frequently Asked Questions – Cruises

World of Quilts Travel offers cruises and/or tours with something for everyone. It is Deb’s goal to provide something unique, showing you a different side of travel while sharing her love of quilts, textiles, traditional crafts and culture.

Our adventures are specifically designed for those who have similar interests and provide a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and share this unique experience with like-minded travelers of all ages.

Below are some answers to frequently asked questions about our trips. If you have any questions which are not answered here or on our FAQ pages for our Tours or Cruises please don’t hesitate to email and I will be happy to get back to you as soon as I can.

Why do people travel to quilt? How often do they travel?

When the terminology “quilt tour” is used, I suppose it does conjure up the vision of ladies and gentlemen traveling to work on quilt. However, quilts and/or textiles are the passion that often brings the group together, and there is not always an active quilting component on every group.

The purpose for the experience varies from group to group. I have groups of quilt and textile historians that travel to see historic pieces while other groups travel to shop for exotic and hard to find fabrics. Still, others travel for the fellowship with those who share their enthusiasm. It seems that when one exists, often the actual quilting project is not as important as spending time with others who have a built in connection through quilts and quilt-making.

How often they travel often depends upon their economic and family situation. I have some clients who have been on many of our trips, others who travel with me once a year, and some who look at a single tour as a way to a brief respite from the ordinary.

What are the essentials/basics of a quilt/textile cruise or tour?

Outside of providing value in a quilt and textile related vacation experience, inspiration is the key essential on any trip; this is found in many ways. Quilters and textile enthusiasts are often inspired by landscapes, museum visits, quilts and textiles they see, by sharing with each other and the bonds they make with their fellow travelers. While the focus of any itinerary is inspired by quilts, a theme is often important in terms of how local quilt-making customs or historic textiles relate to the community that is being visited. One activity that most everyone looks forward to is any opportunity to shop for unusual or locally produced fabrics that will further inspire their quilt-making once they return home.

On our quilt history tours, for those who are historians, I feel it is important to include visits to historic archives and provide unusual opportunities to see antique quilts that are not often available for public viewing. An essential element for me then as a quilter as well as a quilt historian is to have a professional relationship with my colleagues within these institutions as this often opens doors to archives where we would not otherwise have access.

I believe it is helpful when the planner is knowledgeable about quilts and spends time with quilters in areas not surrounded by travel. As a quilter, show judge, appraiser and author, I spend a lot of time around quilts and quilt-makers. This helps me know their special interests and my tours are planned specifically around these things; they are not tours planned and then marketed to those who make quilts. In order for them to produce results, I have noticed a number of “quilt tour” providers that have hired a guest quilter to accompany a land tour group. Many times, this may seem like a benefit to the traveler, but, just as often, an additional cost is added to the tour in order to pay for the famous named guest who is coming along. I will not burden my travelers with those types of additional charges. If I feel that having such a guest would benefit a group or the overall tour experience, I will have one, but it is not a factor I often consider.

It is also important to have knowledge of class and workshop limitations. When planning actual quilting classes the planner should be aware of time constraints, materials and the facility suitability to the project.

I believe my most popular destinations to date have been Ireland, France and Bali, each for different reasons. The beauty of Ireland speaks for itself and we enjoy many scenic vistas along our way. Additionally, we stop at quilt shops up and down the Emerald Isle.  Often, we’ve been compared to an “Irish Quilt Shop Hop”. France is known in history for its contributions to both the fabric and quilt world, and Bali for its exquisite batik fabrics and special culture.

Our most popular cruises have been the ones that go to Alaska, the European Christmas Markets or international destinations such as the Baltic or Asia.

The most popular activity by far is shopping. I try to plan tours that not only offer rewarding textile experiences but also provide a truly memorable experience. Most of my travelers choose a destination they have always wanted to visit.

What is it about World of Quilts Travel that you would like to share?

As a quilter and travel enthusiast, I plan each tour as if I am planning it for myself or my family. I take every stop into consideration. It sometimes takes weeks or longer to create the perfect itinerary. To me, travel is about the total experience as well as providing a good value and I do all that I can to keep the travel experience affordable. I am not a large travel agency; all of my group travel experiences are simply about quilts and textiles.

When selecting a quilt tour or cruise provider, it is important to note there may be others who promote quilt trips that will happen to coincide with their other special-interest group tours. While it might be a fun group I believe that it might be surprise for a group of 10 quilters to find themselves sharing a motor coach with poker players (this has happened). This would be a convenient way for some to fill a coach, but I do not mind keeping my groups small. I find when everyone in a group shares the same passion, bonding is almost instant. Always ask your quilt tour provider if they are promoting the same tour or cruise to any other type of hobby or interest group.

I promote quilt related travel simply for the joy of sharing the world of quilts and textiles with others. I love to travel – and what better way is there to see things than with others who share similar interests.

Who travels on your tours?

Our travelers are of all ages and from all parts of the world. They share a passion for quilts and quilting, textiles, arts and crafts, and share a desire to connect with the lives and cultures in the places they visit. Many who travel with us are first time travelers, while others have done a lot of travel in the past but are looking for something unique that they can’t organize on their own and/or enjoy the company of others with the same interests. The age group of our tour participants ranges from around 35 to 85 years of age but we have had travelers from 13 up join our groups.

Can husbands or companions join a quilt or textile focused tour?

Yes absolutely – although we focus on quilts and textiles there is always something else for those with other interests to do or see. In general, about 20 – 25% of our groups are companions in this category. We always have husbands who come along, so if you want to bring yours, chances are he will not be the only one.

What if I don’t want to participate in the various visits, educational opportunities or hands-on classes?

While Deb does provide a variety of visits, hands-on classes and workshops they are not mandatory. This is your vacation; you may do whatever you like. While the activities are designed for every level and many are purely for fun and interaction with the local people, if there are any activities that you don’t want to do – just let us know and we will suggest alternative activities for you or you may adventure out on your own.

How fit do I have to be to join a tour?

Some of the tours do have periods that require active walking and a few may feature extended coach or train rides (greater than 4 hours) We have found that most people of normal fitness and mobility are able to participate fully. Those who may have difficulty walking may participate at a level comfortable to them. Please see our terms and conditions regarding health issues. Because we are not aware of any individual’s health condition, we do ask that you receive an okay from your health practitioner to participate on any of our tours.

What if I’m a single traveler?

Our groups are a mix of single travelers, couples and friends. If you are a solo traveler and wish to share with someone we will attempt to find someone else on the tour who wishes to share a room. If there is no one wanting to share the only difference in your cost is that of the single room supplement that we pay to our hotels or you may choose not to participate with a full refund of your deposit.

Do you provide travel protection?

Yes, we provide travel protection through several suppliers. On your trip web page, a link is provided to the travel insurance coverage which will also provide you with information about the insurer. You may choose to purchase travel protection through us, or from any provider of your choice. There are many online travel insurance options available to you.

Is travel protection mandatory?

No, we provide it as an option to you, or you can purchase it from any travel insurance provider. However, because unexpected things do happen, we strongly suggest that you have coverage.

Is my deposit refundable?

Yes, your deposit is completely refundable (less a $100 administration fee, $200 administration fee if on a Viking Cruise) if you change your travel plans and cancel up to 45 days prior to the final payment deadline. Please refer to our terms and conditions for additional tour or cruise refund rules.

When do I have to make the final payment for the trip?

Final payment is approximately 90 days prior to the beginning of any cruise or tour. You will receive an invoice by email about 30 days prior to the deadline.

How do I pay?

You may pay with a personal check (if you reside in the US), money order, cashier or bank check (if you reside outside of the US) or, you may use PayPal or Google Pay. Please note, the quoted tour price includes a 3% discount for those paying in by check. Those who choose to pay through PayPal using a credit card will not receive this discount.

What if I wait to sign up for the trip after the final payment deadline?

You may still sign up for the trip after the final payment deadline, providing there is still space available. We will need your payment in full at the time your register however.

Will I need a passport?

You are required to have a passport valid for six months past your tour date for trips outside your country of citizenship.

Will I need to get immunizations?

Most of our tours do not require special immunizations, but some do. Your health care provider is the best judge as to what you may need for your trip. To guide you as to possible immunizations suggested for your itinerary, please refer to http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel.

I am hoping that some of these answers to frequently asked questions about our cruises and cruise events will help you learn more about our programs, if not, please feel free to ask your questions by emailing me at info@worldofquiltstravel.com and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

How soon do I need to register?

We suggest that you register as soon as you know you want to join us. Many of our cruises categories (sometimes including the entire ship) sell out quickly and we have disappointed would be travelers.

What cruise lines do you use?

We only use cruise lines that have universally high ratings and are also “quilter” friendly, in that they allow us to hold classes and related events without much restriction. Generally, we use the following cruise lines: Princess, Holland America and on river cruises we utilize the services of Viking

Do you provide sewing machines?

Yes, whenever they are required for a project, we provide them. We use a variety of dealers, Bernina, Janome, Brother, etc. Not familiar with the machines? No worries as we also provide technical support for the machines during the entire time that machines are in use. You will never even have to thread a needle or wind a bobbin on one of our quilting cruises, our support technicians are always there to assist you in any way so that you have an enjoyable experience.

Is there an opportunity to sew when class is not in session?

Yes, we provide ample open sewing time each evening and at other times when class is not in session. During this time you may work on anything you wish, including  Make-it/Take-it projects or demos when they are offered.

How do I choose my cabin?

We offer inside, ocean view (window) and balcony cabins. If there are suites available to us, we will offer these as well. We will book you in the best available cabin in the category you choose – guaranteed. If you would like to request a certain cabin you may, however, it may not be in our block or it may outside of our pricing category. If this is the case we will do what we can to get you the cabin of your choice for the additional cost of the cabin. However, the reason we like to ‘guarantee’ you the best cabin in a category rather than make a choice on a particular cabin as this gives you a better chance of receiving a complimentary upgrade. If you would like us to try to book a particular cabin for you, please indicate this on the registration form.

What about my flight?

As our cruises leave from departure ports from all over the world and our guests also come from many areas, it is impossible for us to arrange a group flight for cruises. However, this also allows you to fly when you want and from where you want at the best price you can find. It is also a way to use your airline miles or points. We will notify you as soon as we know that our cruise is a ‘go’ so that you may look for the best airfare that suits you. If you would like us to book your air for you, upon request, we are happy to do this, just let us know. We will also arrange transfers between the airport and the ship when you select the appropriate box on the registration form. If you do not wish to make your own air arrangements, we are happy to assist you.

Is transportation provided between the ship and the airport?

Cruise lines generally runs buses the day of the cruise for a fee which will be a choice for you on your registration form. If you are coming in the day before, you will need to find your own transportation to the hotel and cruise terminal. Many hotels offer free transportation from the airports.

What time do I need to arrive in the departure port city on the day of my cruise?

We ask that you plan to arrive no later than 12 noon on the day of your cruise departure, the earlier the better. Please take into account that there may be flight delays and book your flight so that you have an alternative should this occur.

What time should I book my flight to leave for home once the cruise is over?

On the day of embarkation, cruise lines suggest not booking flights that depart before 12 noon.

What if I want to arrive a day or two before the cruise departs?

Frequently we will include a pre-cruise hotel option and this will be indicated on the cruise information page or the information will be sent to you in a separate email. Otherwise, we can provide the name of suitable hotels for you to make a reservation.

How do I register for shore excursions?

Once we receive your registration, we book you with the cruise line and email you your booking number. From here, you may go onto the cruise line website to review and book your shore excursions directly with the cruise line. Wherever possible, we will arrange custom shore excursions to suit the interest of the group. When we do this, this will be indicated on the cruise web page or included in a special email.

What is included in the price of my quilting cruise?

If you are a quilter, in addition to the cruise, your cruise includes onboard quilting parties and events, workshops and sewing machines are included in the price. If a teacher has a kit or a required pattern and there is an additional fee the cost will be payable directly to the teacher. Information on kits or other materials, including price, will be listed on the website where class information is available.

To be certain of what we do include, everything that is indicated on the individual cruise itinerary pricing page and is listed as ‘included’ is covered by your quilter cruise cost.

How do I choose my classes or workshops?

About 90 days prior to departure, we will send out a class enrollment form by email. You will choose your classes and submit the form to us any time after this date. Classes will be filled on a first come first serve basis. Most get their first class choices, rarely does anyone not get their first or second choice.

What about dining?

Cruise ships offer several dining options. Except for dinner, these are very flexible. Unless a sponsor of a cruise requests that everyone dine together, we request flexible (anytime) dinner dining for everyone. This way, you may eat when and where you want, even in the dining room where you will have the same menu as those who participate in an early or late dinner service.

What about formal nights?

Cruise ships will indicate how many formal or gala nights they have on a cruise on their own registration pages. We will try to indicate the formal nights on our cruise event calendar, however they are subject to change, and frequently cruise lines do change this night sometime during the cruise. Changes such as this are out of our control. The number of formal nights differ for each cruise line and cruise itinerary. Formal or gala nights are optional, meaning if you do not wish to dress in what is referred to as cocktail or formal attire, then you may dine somewhere of your choice other than the main dining rooms. For those wishing to join the Formal Night dinner festivities, we suggest that ladies bring a pair of black pants and a dressy top or cocktail dress. For men, a jacket is minimally required.

What about tips?

Cruise lines will automatically charge a set amount (around $13-15 a day per person) to your shipboard account to cover tips for your room steward and dining room staff. Once the cruise begins, you are free to make an adjustment to this amount at any time by submitting a form that the ship’s front desk will supply.

• Batting or flannel to use as a “design wall”
• Notebook and pen or pencil to take notes
• Digital camera or phone to take photos of design options (optional)

• Optional but helpful: Adventures in Improv Quilts by Cindy Grisdela

Curves and Stripes

Improv Curves and Stripes

Learn to create Improv Curves and Angled Stripes to make this cheerful wall hanging. Even if you’ve never sewed curves before, you’ll be confident in no time, because there are no pins, no templates, and no seams to match. Use your favorite colors and fabrics in solids, prints, or a combination.

• Batting or flannel to use as a “design wall”
• Notebook and pen or pencil to take notes
• Digital camera or phone to take photos of design options (optional)

Supplies

  • You will be preparing this for machine appliqué. That will not be done during class.  I will meet with you during free sew time and demonstrate machine appliqué.  The machines will be available during free sew time for you to appliqué your project.  Bring Thread to match your project.

Block Prints

Block Prints
Quilt size 92” X 92””

Freeform blocks are abstract interpretations of traditional quilt blocks. How would you like to make triangle blocks without templates and marking with as few measurements as possible? See what
happens when you embrace the imperfections and irregularities of human hands. Organic cutting and piecing techniques mimic the appearance of block prints of India. Each block is different from
the next in size, shape and form, yet there is overall harmony and balance to the quilt. You will learn to trust your instinct and eyeballing skills to further explore many possibilities for the final
layout.

Technique: Machine Pieced, improve piecing
Level: Experienced Beginning Quilter

Supply List

  • Basic Sewing supplies – scissors, pins,
  • Rotary cutting supplies – 45 mm rotary cutter with sharp blade, 18” ruler, cutting mat
  • Design wall

Yardage Requirements for the quilt top
While selecting fabrics, think of value and contrast. Select light medium and dark fabrics with various textures. Contrasting colors and textures create drama in any quilt

  • Fabrics for the Blocks
16 to 18 Fat Quarters of light to medium value solids or tone on tone prints
16 to 18 Fat Quarters of medium to dark value small to medium prints
  • Book – Cultural Fusion Quilts

Pre-Class homework
Pre-wash and iron fabrics if preferred and follow the cutting instructions.

For the classroom purpose, precut at least 4 blocks worth of fabrics which requires 2 strips each from four different light/med and 2 strips each of four different med/dark fabrics.

Cutting the fabrics
From each light/med fabric: Cut 2 strips 5 ½”X 20”
From each med/dark fabric: Cut 2 strips 5 ½”X 20”
Make stacks of strips each containing two of the same dark and two of the same light strips. With the
right sides up, arrange them in alternating order. Pin each stack for easier handling.
